Sometimes a painting teaches the artist more than the artist teaches the painting. This horse painting reached several "almost finished" moments over five days. Looking back at one earlier photograph, I realized I loved the freshness it still carried. There were always three horses in the composition. A friend couldn't quite see the quiet yellow horse because it blended into the blue horse beside it. That one observation stayed with me, and I found myself changing the painting instead of simply finishing it. You can read this and click through to see the final painting.  This morning I rediscovered Blue Moon , one of my favorite wolf paintings, along with every process photograph from its creation. Looking through those images reminded me that every painting begins with uncertainty and grows one layer at a time. That couldn't have come at a better moment. A fresh canvas is waiting in my studio today, and perhaps that's the lesson we all need from time to time—to trust the process, begin anyway, and discover where the journey leads. This Appaloosa, painted years ago while I lived at Lake Cypress Springs, a photo of it found its way back into my hands this week and reminded me why I fell in love with painting horses in the first place. As artists, we often look backward to move forward. Studying older work can reveal forgotten color combinations, fresh ideas, and even the confidence to begin again. Looking at this painting, I was reminded that color has always been my language. The past few months have been a season of healing. This week I reached a small but meaningful milestone, and with it came the realization that perhaps my path back to the easel is closer than I imagined.
