Two Black Horses disappeared from the first Santa Fe gallery that represented my work. It was stolen. Looking at the painting again all these years later, however, I find myself thinking less about the theft and more about the things we spend our lives collecting. Clothes. Shoes. Houses. Beautiful things. There is nothing wrong with enjoying them—but eventually we learn there is a difference between enjoying something and needing more of it. There comes a time when we don't need to keep filling our lives with things that don't fill our hearts. Kindness. Compassion. Love. Forgiveness. Serving someone who needs us. Other times it is hidden among all the other colors and distractions of our lives. Looking at this horse painting again reminded me that perhaps we spend too much time searching for the spectacular while overlooking the quieter gifts already around us. A phone call. A familiar song. An unexpected kindness. A morning when your heart simply feels lighter. Maybe gold isn't always something we have to chase. There was enough of that wonderful mess of reds, greens, turquoise, browns, gold and white to begin again. This time I returned to the original 30 × 40 canvas—the surface still stained by what had been there before. I began with what was left on the remaining canvas, still stained with original paint.   A single horse emerged at the center of four strong sections of light and dark. Only later did I begin seeing things I hadn't deliberately painted. A wolf, guitars, crosses....   And if you look long enough, perhaps you'll discover something...

State lines.  County lines.  Traffic lanes.  Rules.  Schedules.  Boundaries.  Sometimes it feels as though everything is telling us where to go and where not to go.   Looking again at my painting Crossing the County Line, I realized those feelings had found their way onto the canvas years ago. The horses live among lines, shapes and divisions, yet they seem to be searching for open space. Maybe we are sometimes doing the same thing. I remember the freedom of our years living at the lake—the woods, the stars, the quiet and simply having room to breathe.  Today I am learning that freedom isn't always about changing where we live. Sometimes it is about finding that open place within ourselves again and trusting God to lead us from there. ...

Instead of looking backward, I began seeing paintings waiting to be created. White hydrangeas blooming in cool northern summers reminded me of the ones we struggle to keep alive through the relentless Texas heat. Every year, Terry faithfully waters, shades, and nurtures them, reminding me that beauty often requires patience and care. As I continued scrolling through years of photographs, I realized I wasn't simply revisiting memories—I was rediscovering inspiration. Rivers, forests, horses, flowers, wildlife, and quiet moments I had forgotten are now becoming the foundation for future paintings. Perhaps we all need to ask...

She had already begun seeing the world through an artist's eyes. Looking at her reminded me that children don't paint to impress anyone. They paint because they love to discover. Perhaps that's one of summer's greatest gifts. Wonder keeps us young. Gratitude keeps us at peace. Faith keeps us moving forward. Sometimes the greatest lessons come from slowing down long enough to see the world through the eyes of a child once again.
