Mr Man

MR MAN Cartoon Painting with Melissa Cootsana  by Laurie Pace   The Man that entered back here in 2026. Several years ago, in the summer of 2022, I took a workshop with Melinda Cootsona.  We were all seasoned painters — artists with years (and in my case decades) of experience. Melinda’s gift was not just teaching technique so much as encouraging us to push past habit. She asked us to loosen control, take risks, and wander into unfamiliar territory. Magic appeared in unexpected ways. © Laurie Pace        Graphics One Design 2026 At one point she asked us to explore cartoon-like characters.   That word — cartoon — did not sit comfortably with me. I was trained as a fashion illustrator. My work has always leaned toward structure, refinement, and intention. “Cartoon” felt foreign, almost dismissive of the language I knew so well. I tried once. I failed. Then I tried again — and Mr. Man appeared. He arrived without a plan. I wa...

Fleeting Moment in Time... figurative painting by Texas artist Laurie Pace

I am thinking the year I painted this was 2004 and probably fall. I really enjoyed the journey and the intended message with rose in hand was the thoughts we cannot read. Perhaps if her gaze was part of the painting, you might see wonderment or joy....OR you might see tears and heartbreak.  What ever it was... it is fleeting moments never to be locked in time, but we all manage to lock all these fleeting moments into feelings that linger in our minds and hearts.  “ Life is made up of a collection of moments that are not ours to keep. The pain we encounter throughout our days spent on this earth comes from the illusion that some moments can be held onto. Clinging to people and experiences that were n...

First Love by Texas Artist Laurie Pace, The Sounds of Music via brushwork and canvas.

" The painting is the daughter of a friend I have known all of her life.  Soft and precious and real in so many ways.  A young girl lost in the music of her instrument.  Reminds me of how easily I get lost in playing my piano or one of my guitars.  If you look closely you see the triangle that is the main part of the composition rising from the bottom of the painting.  The eye actually enters at the top left of the canvas and you come straight down the instrument to the beautiful hair and face of the young girl. The concentration is only broken by her arm parallel to the bottom edge of the painting. The arm stops you from leaving the painting. You are to stay, study and enjoy the sto...

Face Within by Texas Contemporary Artist Laurie Pace - Figurative Painting

© Laurie Pace        Graphics One Design 2021 Face Within  30 x 40 Oil on Canvas  by Laurie Pace  Shop Available Artwork.   Sign up for my quarterly newsletter and painting sales. Face within.  What does that mean?  Faces are funny in so many ways. We often wear them as a mask so others do not know our thoughts, our insecurities, or even our reactions. When do we lower the mask? In this journey on this figurative painting,  I was repurposing a canvas with a prior painting on it.  There are two faces in this piece.  Hence the name, Face Within.  I do believe we all hide a huge portion of who we are in our heart as well as our feelings of insecurity and worry.  Always look at the eyes. They tell the story within you.  Can you find the second face on this painting?    “ So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we p...

Melina Marchetta I did not even want to ‘share my thoughts today’ after I read this…but I want to share the rest of the quote. “This hand says you spend the rest of your life with me," he said, holding out his left hand, "and this one says I spend the rest of my life with you. Choose." She bit her lip, tears welling in her eyes. She took both of his hands in hers and he shuddered. "I will die...

This painting feels done, but I will hang it in the studio and see if it calls back to me.  It looks like a woven tapestry in person, fully textured and the color with beautiful jewel type hues.  I love the quote I found... basically because you never know how strong your connection is with God until you are in 'hot water', or an unexpected situa...
