There they were. Five rather substantial buffalo staring back at him. They weren't peacefully grazing in the distance. They weren't standing majestically beneath a western sunset. They were coming straight at him. I had begun the painting knowing where the buffalo would be. The mountains created strong V shapes behind them, directing your eye toward the herd. What I didn't know was how much color those buffalo would eventually acquire. The buffalo weren't born crazy-colored. They became that way. Apparently, quite enthusiastically. By the time Steve opened the package, those five buffalo had become exactly who they intended to be. His assessment? “It may not sell.” Well. I had already painted them. I had already...

We don't ask for the deep water or the unexpected changes. Yet those times often teach us how much we need God—and how much we need one another. Sometimes we lean on Him. Sometimes He places someone beside us to help us keep moving. And sometimes we are given the opportunity to be that person for someone else. Isaiah 43:2 tells us: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you…” There is one word in that verse I keep returning to. Through. We are going somewhere. We are not promised that today will remain as it is forever. So if today is difficult, lift your eyes. Keep moving. Keep trusting. Let someone walk beside you. You are not alone.  God is there.  And there is hope ahead....

© Laurie Pace        Graphics One Design 2026 My Traveling Zinnias What Gives Us Life “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” — Psalm 46:1 We have all heard it: Bloom where you are planted. Apparently, no one explained that to our zinnias. It is August in Texas. The heat is relentless and we are heading into a sun forced Indian Summer in September. The winds are coming hard out of the south, the grass is burning beneath our feet, and watering is restricted to two certain days. We are up at 4:30 in the morning on those days, trying to give the enormous oak trees, flowers and grass enough water to endure another three or four days. Some of the zinnias have had enough. They haven't died. They've moved. Well...as much as a zinnia can move. They have bent almost to the ground and stretched themselves toward the shade beneath our porch swing. And there, tucked away from the worst of the Texas sun, they are still blooming. Bees are still buzzi...

And as we grow older, perhaps one of the most important—stand back up. When I was young, I thought standing your ground meant refusing to move. Life taught me differently. Sometimes faith asks us to stand firm. Sometimes wisdom tells us to leave. Sometimes love means standing beside another person through whatever comes. Looking back over my life, I can see people God placed beside me long before I understood why they would matter. And when Terry and I eventually found our way back to one another, we made one decision before our marriage that has remained our foundation: We would stand before the Lord. But every morning Terry and I still sit at our kitchen table over oatmeal and bananas and play two games of Chinese Checkers.   We are fairly evenly matched. Our strategies? Not so much. 😊 This morning those colorful marbles reminded me that perhaps growing older isn't about desperately trying to remain young. It is about remaining open to life. Walk. Read. Laugh. Call someone you love. Eat your favorite breakfast. Wear something that makes you feel good. And every now and then, forget the chores for a few minutes and play. State lines.  County lines.  Traffic lanes.  Rules.  Schedules.  Boundaries.  Sometimes it feels as though everything is telling us where to go and where not to go.   Looking again at my painting Crossing the County Line, I realized those feelings had found their way onto the canvas years ago. The horses live among lines, shapes and divisions, yet they seem to be searching for open space. Maybe we are sometimes doing the same thing. I remember the freedom of our years living at the lake—the woods, the stars, the quiet and simply having room to breathe.  Today I am learning that freedom isn't always about changing where we live. Sometimes it is about finding that open place within ourselves again and trusting God to lead us from there. ...

This morning I gave myself three minutes. Three minutes later, the piles surrounding me were gone and my desk was clear. Sometimes finding a little peace—and even a little joy—begins that simply. Looking at an unfinished stage of my painting Crossing the County Line reminded me of another lesson. There are moments in the studio when pushing harder doesn't help. You have to stop, step away, breathe and allow yourself to find the quiet again. Tomorrow I'll share what happened when I returned to this painting. Sometimes joy isn't far away at all.
