ON THE LAM — And Apparently I’ve Been There Too
For ten years I had the title of this painting spelled wrong.
On the Lamb.
There are no lambs in this painting. 😂
What I meant was On the Lam—running away, escaping, avoiding something.
That little discovery sent my brain racing almost as quickly as the horses in the painting.
For the past several years, I have struggled with something I never expected: losing confidence behind the wheel. After losing a car I loved, I went through several vehicles that simply never felt right. Eventually I found myself driving less and less.
Seven weeks ago, that finally changed. I found a vehicle that feels right to me. This morning I drove Hubby and me home from Costco while my passenger played chess on his phone and occasionally offered completely unnecessary observations about my driving.
Thank you, dear. 😂
But I drove.
And with every trip, a little more confidence comes back.
Then I walked into the studio and looked at this painting from 2016.
The color. The movement. The four horses surging together. The reds, purples, turquoise, green and white. There is rhythm in it—almost music.
And suddenly I realized:
I still have that inside me.
Perhaps I have been doing with my easel exactly what I did with driving.
The ability didn't disappear.
My confidence did.
Sometimes we don't deliberately walk away from the things we love. We simply stop showing up quite as often. Life happens. Grief happens. Family happens. Age happens. Then one day we look around and realize we've been gone.
“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely...” — Philippians 4:8
Maybe it's time to concentrate less on the noise and more on the good, the pure and the real that God has placed before us.
Show up and use what He gave you.
Be the best version of yourself you can be today.
And if you've been on the lam from something good in your own life, perhaps it's time to come home.
As for me? I'm heading back to the easel.
