ALWAYS TOWARD THE LIGHT — Sometimes What Is Left Becomes the Beginning

When the sun rose today, I was ready with a happy heart.
This painting began in an unlikely place—with paint scraped from another canvas.
A large painting wasn't working, so I scraped the oil paint onto a board. My palette knife had mixed the colors into deep greens, ochres, browns and wonderful earthy tones.
No hesitation... I just painted.
That scraped paint became two completely different paintings. 30 x 40 inches in size. Today I am sharing the first, Two from the Herd in the Sun. Tomorrow I will share the second.
Look at the upper left of the painting and follow the white and gold.
The light moves through the horses, crosses the composition and leads the eye downward through those deeper earth colors and back to the left lower corner.
And somewhere while looking at it again, I realized how much painting can resemble life.
We all carry things forward. Some are beautiful memories. Others are experiences we might gladly scrape away and leave behind.
But perhaps not everything that comes from a difficult place has to be wasted.
Sometimes God uses what remains.
The light in my life is God the Father.
I may not always know exactly where the road ahead leads, but I know where to look for the Light.
And perhaps we can carry a little of that light for someone else along the way—with a word, a kindness, a prayer, or simply by being there.
Sometimes, perhaps, even with a painting.
Always toward the Light.
