“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.   Delicious Ambiguity.” ― Gilda Radner

When I begin a painting, I really have no idea where it is going to go. Something’s have to come out of me unplanned or the process loses the spontaneity that I see on the canvas. There is never a clear shot of a beginning, a middle or an end. I always hold high hopes that there will be. Allowing the painting to own its direction and me not control it, always produces the best paintings.

It was really exciting to get back in the studio and work in this week. I spent two days cleaning up the studio so I felt good going in and actually working. You can see from the picture that I posted above in that small area below, there is a small sketch that if I am working from on the painting.   Because I am working on a square canvas, I chose to do a light grid on the sketch and then some light grid lines on the larger canvas.  I like to remain very loose as I sketch on the larger canvas from the small sketch.   It gives the opportunity for the paining to take on its own personality if it has a nice and loose sketch on the surface. From this point I will begin to decide on the colors throughout the composition and whether I am using a knife or a brush to create this piece.

It seems no to matter how hard I try to tame my colors; I am simply addicted to brighter hues.  As I begin to paint, I kept thinking the background would stay dark and I chose to go with the Navy hues, some purple and mauve hues toned down by ice blue and some greys.   The important thing was to keep my colors balanced on the surface and maintain the freedom that I saw in the horses.  My next journal post will share my progress as I add the colors to the surface.
