The Painting: This painting is for Christine in the UK...her sweet Tommy.
The Thought: Christine wrote me and ask me to paint Tommy. She sent quite a few photos for me to see how lovely this sweet gelding is.
Christine wrote me that Tommy is a 14.1hh piebald cob gelding who is about 25 years old. He spent a large part of his life pulling carts along busy roads. That tells me he is like those grazing cows from yesterday's blog. STEADY. When he 'retired' from this he was a pony for a young girl and Christine has him four days a week. She spends that time riding through the country side exploring and enjoying the sheer freedom of time spent with Tommy. It was told that he loves to feel the wind in his mane. This is an intelligent horse that has served his time working and now in retirement is truly enjoying living. He is ever protective of his rider and enjoys obviously enjoys retirement!
So many children grow up with the dream of horse back riding or owning their own horse. They truly do not know the huge responsibility that comes with it, but they watch with starry eyes every time they see a horse and rider pass by. Christine waited until adulthood when her kids were all in school to finally take up horseback riding with lessons and with this unbelievable horse. The timing was Gods and the joy is now Christine's and God's.
God wants each of us to have those special things in life. His timing is not always our timing. When mixing in general life, growing up, education and living, often our hopes and dreams from childhood are lost along the way. When I hear a story like this, it tugs at my heart as I know the true joy and freedom that comes from horseback riding. You don't have to be a child to enjoy it... the time will come and it will all happen.
May your dreams of childhood never leave your hope and thoughts for today and tomorrow.
