Fruit Painting, Apple Painting, Country Store by Texas Artist Laurie Pace, Knowledge and Wisdom

Country Store
This apple is part of a larger painting that I am working on. So in progress you might say. It is a bowl with apples, lemons, pears, avocados and some yellow squash.  When you visit the local country store you can buy almost all of these for a great fruit painting.

Contact me if you would like to see the final image of the painting. Laurie

Knowledge and Wisdom

The Tree of Knowledge is part of the story from the Garden of Eden. We mostly know it as the apple tree.  Eve was basically dared to taste the fruit and Adam stood by her side and never suggested it was a bad thing to do... so humankind took 'knowledge'.  Some references refer to it as the Tree of Conscience, in Hebrew,  .עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע

In the beginning, if Adam and Eve lived in the garden without knowledge, they lived simply with all the creatures in the garden. There was no thought to hunger, working, or household chores. It was perfection as God created it all.  By eating the apple, they immediately became thinkers. They possessed the ability to think about things, right and wrong. Previously this power had only been God's, not theirs.  With this new knowledge or conscience, they became separated from God's perfection and discovered the shame of disobedience. They became thinkers and no longer did they live that simple life of love and faith. With conscience aka knowledge, they quickly experienced shame, guilt, embarrassment, anger, disappointment and probably every other feeling you could name.  Before the apple they knew none of this.

Now life was sweat labor and the pain of bearing children. Life was a struggle to exist, survive, eat and live for the next day.  Have our lives changed at all?  Have we taken this knowledge to the next step... wisdom?

I think not.... or we would not be so messed up. How many centuries and lives will come and go before we use all this knowledge and find wisdom?  From an early beginning of direct experience man slammed right into  thinking about things and controlling things. If you ever manage to put thought and language out of a situation you being to experience things directly on a sensory level.  Our human addiction to over thinking things and acting to control them makes our life of separation from God continue.

Wisdom is gained from a deep understanding of people and situations. It gives us the ability to choose how to act or react with out having to think about things. It applies and uses both perception and knowledge at the same time. Wisdom is made up of knowledge and experience.

Knowing others is intelligence;knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. (Tao Te Ching, 33, tr. S. Mitchell)

ON the Club 47 challenge, I managed 208 minutes of exercise this week.  I hope if you have taken to heart trying to add something into your life for positive change that you are doing it one day at a time just as we all are doing it. See more about the challenge in my sidebar to the right. I have the knowledge to know exercise means a healthier body and mind.  I now have the wisdom to DO IT!

Blue Hydrangea and Pink Geraniums
Bobbie Jean Pots
Talk about OUT of the BOX... this is it for me. I have pots from my decease mother-in-law that are wonderful. THE REALLY old clay pots. Terry filled them with different flowers for the summer and I sat outside and sketch this out on ...hold on... 6 x 6 inch linen canvas paper.  Then I work in acrylics for a change in pace.  If I can get out of my box, you can too! Enjoy this tiny beauty... ready to slip into a frame and enjoy.

MOVING FORWARD

I wrote a friend in North Carolina yesterday about my life.  Right now I am so exhausted I am struggling with health... mental and physical. The trip to Santa Fe took all of my spunk out of me... it was a hard turn around. What I do know is life is continuing to move forward. My choice is to know with confidence that God is in charge and He has me close in His embrace.  If I did not believe this I could not make it through this day or the next one.

One's fears and anxieties and issues keep you from living life forward. It is like trying to drive your car with the emergency brake on.  To move forward you have to not empower those things in your life. Refocus on Christ and keep Him centered in your life. While you are powerless, He is not and He promises to care for you in all ways.

Refuse to give into the problem. Celebrate an understanding with God and move forward to prosperity. Make room in your life for His highest good for your life.

In the club 47 challenge I am averaging 45 min a day in exercising.  Totaling for the past 6 days I have 165 minutes invested.  Hopefully today will add another 45 minutes putting me at 200 minutes for the week.

Wildlife Painting THE WOLF, Wolf Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Laurie Pace, Little Red Riding Hood, Grandmother and the Closet

The Wolf

5 x 7 inches Oil on Clayboard

Wolves and Closets

When I think of wolves it is generally in terms of Little Red Riding Hood and that awful story of her grandmother getting tied up or eaten by the wolf.  Different versions are heard in different families.  I prefer the one where grandmother is tied up in the closet and the wolf jumps in bed wearing her sleep bonnet and nightgown.  Grandmother must have been cold in the closet.

When we stay hidden in closets we miss out much on life.  It is much the same as staying in the box, aka the comfort zone. I cannot begin to tell you how much you miss in your closet, or your box. Some folks never move from their 'boxes'. Well, maybe for a day trip or a week trip, but they come right back to the box and neatly keep their life in control.

Life has taught me well. I know I have no control. Only God has control. I believe my early days of my twenties and my severe bouts of agoraphobia made me keenly aware of the limitations of living in a box. Having faith to strike out and try new things and deal with inadequacies along the way is usually asking too much.  Putting yourself outside your comfort zone makes you vulnerable.  Neale Donald Walsch says "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone."  I have quoted him on this often.  Becoming stagnant is comparable to dying.  With agoraphobia in my early twenties I often felt like I was transparent and the world went on with out me. As I had children I had to learn to cope and although it seemed so much safer NOT to venture out, I had to and I did.

Right now the world is alive.  Yes it has too many worldly things you could get caught up into, but if you climb out of your box, you will find people to serve and things to do that complete you as a person growing and changing.  Don't wait until the wolf comes to steal your bonnet and your night clothes... don't wait to be locked in your closet...go out your front door today and do something unexpected for someone you do not even know.  Spread His Love like seed scattered in your community.  Lead by example and others will follow.

Divine Order

I have many friends that share the thought what is to happen in the future is already written in Heaven.  Sheriff Paul says it all the time.  He is the one that told us this area was like living in pre-Heaven with the beauty of the land and the people that live here. The Sheriff's faith is strong and he lives his life following the Lord.

It actually takes a lot of pressure off if you begin to contemplate the fullness of what he is saying. We are accustomed to crying, worrying, grieving and pacing when we are confronted with circumstances that seem to be out of our control. Prayer is the answer, be it offered up alone in conversation with God or if you can gather with others and lift it up in the power of 'where two or more are gathered in my name'.

Prayer will bring a release of tension in your body and your mind. Slowly you will begin to relax and open your worries to a clear head. Your heart will listen for God's wisdom. When you do this, you open yourself to divine order and the plans God has for you.

God is all knowing. His plan is greater than anything you can conceive. Allowing Him into your life takes the pressure off of you. Less worry and planning and less manipulating things around you.

On the Club 47 challenge.. I have managed to exercise 20-30 minutes each day so I am easily on track for shooting past 100 minutes a week.  I am aiming for 180 minutes in fact this week.  Strength comes with the habit of doing it. I am creating the habit to exercise again.

Morning Climb

BibleGateway.com is a site I use to look up my bible verses and to cross reference things.  I also subscribe to their daily thoughts but rarely have time to read them.  The one yesterday caught my eye because of all the things I have been writing this week.

I personally feel like the climb has begun physically (Challenge 47)  as I began my exercise program of a promise of at least 100 minutes a week.  I am up to 40 min in the two days so far... and should exceed this weekly, but I up till now since last fall, I have done ZERO per week. Last year at this time I worked out almost an hour every day.  I need to get back to that level.

When I wrote about the bridge yesterday and crossing the vast misty valley... it rang a bell in my head when I read about climbing the mountain in a swift glance to the morning mail out. They compared the getting to know Christ with the climbing of a mountain.  When you are at the foot of the mountain your eyes cannot see very much.  When you live in the valley of a mountain you are limited to what is there at ground level... you miss out on other things.

As you climb the first knoll of the mountain you can see a bit further and experience a bit more as your mind expands with the new views and all you are taking in.  The higher you climb the more you see and your mind expands with thoughts.

The more you get to know Christ, the more you discover the beauty of His love. The heights and depths of His love are incomprehensible. (Yeah, remember that song, My love is deeper than the deepest ocean wider than a mile...etc).

"But who has ever gained the summit? Who has known all the heights and depths of the love of Christ which passes knowledge? Paul, when grown old, sitting grey-haired, shivering in a dungeon in Rome, could say with greater emphasis than we can, "I know whom I have believed" for each experience had been like the climbing of a hill, each trial had been like ascending another summit and his death seemed like gaining the top of the mountain, form which he could see the whole of the faithfulness and the love of him to whom he had committed his soul. Get thee up, dear friend, into the high mountain."  Morning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon.

CROSSING OVER

Sometimes there is a long bridge ahead in life.  The bridge is crossing over open deep gorges of things unknown that are lost in a dark mist.  The bridge is so long you cannot see the land on the other side, and yet you have no choice but to move forward and cross the bridge.  You are paralyzed in fear before you even begin with the first step.

How would you cross over?   Easy answer for me who does not like to drive. If it were a driving situation I typically hit a bridge and go fast fast fast....I figure if I go slow the anguish and fear have longer to take hold of me... so it is easier to take a deep cleansing breath and increase my speed to cross knowing full well God is right beside me in the process.

But what if the bridge is soooo long that you cannot do that? Whether by foot or by the use of transportation...it is a 5 mile bridge.

In life there are always times and occurrences that loom before us like the unending bridge.  We have no insight as to what is on the other side of the bridge and the alternative route of climbing through the rocks below and wading through dark foreboding streams is not acceptable.  God has made it clear to us that our path is only on this bridge and it is only one way and there is no other choice left open to us.  Things are out of our control, yet GOD is not out of our grasp. He is right there.

He will walk you across that bridge. He will carry you across that bridge. The importance is your acceptance to give up control and have total faith in the upcoming journey. He wants you to view it as something with possibilities and keep your mind open while you listen for His directions in your life. Don't assume anything. Be still and know that He is God. He is your protector, your strength and your guide as you make this crossing over.

Un-named Painting New Me Abstract Horse Painting by Texas Artist Laurie Pace,

Un-named Scraped Painting

This is the final shot of this before I scraped it. With out white paint I could not finish it.  I am so thankful to Jim at Asel Art in Richardson that sent me paint that arrived 36 hours later and I am able to paint again... and revisit this same profile starting from scratch. When I work on this painted pulls, my signature Painted Ponies, I work wet. It is difficult to go back and move the paint around or add paint once it is dry or beginning to dry. Someone emailed me and ask if I had a picture of the painting before I scraped it...so here it is.

NEW ME

This was a good lead in thought as this painting will begin again, just as I had encouraged you to do this week.  Sometimes starting over seems exhausting as we over think how to reinvent ourselves.  That alone is overwhelming and why do you need to reinvent yourself?  I know I almost dread approaching this canvas!

It is a matter of discarding the negative images that seem to control you. If you begin to focus on the positive and refuse to allow the negativity in, you reinforce the foundation of self and begin to remold the person you are...like a reshaping in a sense.  Sometimes we limit our ability to move forward by fear of failure. Sometimes we limit our ability to love ourselves and others by fear of not being good enough.

My dear friend, our Heavenly Father created you and you are precious. You have taken on things in your life that camouflage who you truly are. Hiding behind insecurities and presumed inabilities.  Is it possible to just stop and accept this and begin to let go of some of those?  Write down a new vision. Write down some small new goals that are out of your comfort zone.  Don't wait...the time is now to begin this new adventure.

In support of many artists on Contemporary Fine Art International, I have joined Operation 47 with Kimberly Conrad and many many other artists as we take that stance to change our lives for the better and to start now.  I pulled back out the Wii and bought batteries so I can do the 45 min program I was doing before we moved to the lake last year. Terry and I walk at least three or four days a week, so by doing this and making sure I do it, I have committed to 100 min of exercise a week. That is not much, but it is a start. I have other personal issues I struggle with and God knows what they are. I grow stronger as I realize so much of what I worry with is UNIMPORTANT.

Join me and lets revise or reframe our goals and values and our intentions in life. God will guide us in our spiritual journey and support us in our physical transformations.   Lets Celebrate the NEW ME in each of us.  God is smiling.

Inner Peace

Some how this morning my inner peace is a bit stressed. For some reason on my big Mac in the study, I cannot load images onto my blog. I can do it with my laptop, but there is no fun or gain in doing that everyday working off two computers. It will grow old.  Why does it all work on the lap top and not on the big Mac?

The next thing that shakes my inner peace is my Mac Mail. talk about scrambled eggs. My new incoming mail appears in my trash mail on my mac. I have to watch both places now. This occurred this weekend after I cleaned out 15mb of email.  Wish I knew but I do not.

After much searching on the Mac Forum I did receive some positive suggestions and I have gone back in and adjusted a few things... so I am praying for a fix this morning.

True Inner Peace will be restored by simple silence and reconnecting to God and his steady assurance. A good mantra would be "Be Still, and know that I am God." By disconnecting from the outside world,  you gain strength for from the quiet of God's presence. Trusting in Him you realize instantly that the 'stuff' happening in the outside world is no longer important. What is important is trusting in Him brings peace to you. Aligning yourself with His higher power brings this inner peace.

Now I will also share I have joined the CLUB 47 challenge from Kimberly Conrad. She has committed to lose 47 pounds in 47 weeks and to sell 47 paintings for $47 and donate $4.70 to breast cancer research.   My challenge for myself is 100 minutes of exercise a week for 10 weeks,  try to loose my last 10 pounds in the next 10 months (remember I have taken off 18-20 lbs since last August), Donate 10% of the sales of my $125 paintings to Alzheimers Research.  I will figure out a way in the blog on the side to monitor my progress.  This may have to be a full artist CFAI project.

INNER PEACE....God will guide me through this as I begin this day.

Abstract Horse Painting Woven Horses by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

WIPE OUT  Woven Horses
With so much scraped paint, I played on the canvas one more time and then Terry scraped it and washed it clean for me. I hope today my replacement paint arrives from Asel.

SOLD for DP but truly a WIPE OUT.

28 x 42 inches Oil on Canvas
© Laurie Pace   Graphics One Design 1998-2011

WIPE OUT?  WIPE CLEAN!

That was easy to predict.  WIPE OUT.  Only I do not see my definition on WIKI.  I scanned the entire page and did not find anything like "scraping or doing away with" . Even if it was doing away with one's self or one's painting...surfing or painting.

Do we 'wipe out' in life as well?  I found stories of pollution wiping out ocean life... and that life on Mars was wiped out from a nuclear catastrophe 180 million years ago.  More segments on America's TV show Wipeout and German Wipeout Racing Games along with the creation of artificial life with a synthetic cell that could wipe out humanity? I do not think so.

All of this reflection over wiping out a canvas... or maybe I should say WIPING CLEAN a canvas. I rather like the feeling of 'wiping clean'.  It gives hope where as 'wipe out' does not.  Wiping clean gives an option to cleanse or wash away the unneeded. It allows room for good and growth to build. It gives you an opportunity to begin again.

That is what I hope today if my paints arrive from Asel Art. I want to begin again on my painting. This was a huge first for me... so part of me is anxious to see what will come of a new start. This canvas has seen life already and felt the buildling of layers. The surface is not new... it is used, but it is as clean as it can be.  Could it be a masterpiece?

Perhaps that is something to reflect in life... wiping clean your slate and beginning again with God.  He loves us so much that He provided a way for us to step into His grace and light by receiving Jesus in our lives. When we do that we begin again with a clean slate.  Could you be a masterpiece?

Sometimes I wish we could do that with relationships here on earth.  Humans carry such large burdened rocks that they are unable to being again. Many times repairs cannot be made in relationships because to wipe it clean means to forgive and forget and begin again. Heavy rocks not discarded weigh down the earthly journey.

Much thought for you today...to not wipe out but wipe clean and begin again...with God and with those you love.

The Dancer aka Red Ribbon Lacing

I began this painting in February of this year and finally finished it up yesterday. I have written before it has an uncanny resemblance to my niece. Terry spotted that in February.  So as I finished it yesterday I renamed it 'The Dancer'.

INVESTMENT

I choose this word after the 'yesterday' I had.  I finished this painting first yesterday and I had quite an investment of time in the layering of all the glazes. Then I worked on a commission painting for an art teacher in Canada. I am doing it basically for supplies as a 'gift' between artists.  I will finish it today. I have a invested journey in it as it is one of my signature painted pony pulls.

Then came the afternoon. That is where investment really began.  I started a painting for the Rare Gallery in Jackson Hole.  I have already completed several wolves for their walls and I needed to do a horse painting. When I work on these I work wet and I had mixed in impasto because I have to ship this next week and it needed to be dry.  I had taken a glance at paint supplies and knew I had two large tubes of white left.  This surface of this painting is 28 x 42 x 2 inches of beautiful custom stretched canvas. I worked nonstop from about 11:30 until almost three thirty when I reached in for my last tube of white oils and in my hand was a large tube of OPEN GOLDEN ACRYLICS.    I believe that is the time I went into shock.  There is no way to finish an open wet painting that only works when it is wet and movable when one does not have any more white paint.  I prayed about this for about fifteen minutes and then I scrapped the canvas.  I needed to order the paints and begin again on a new surface.  It did absolutely no good to worry, fret or think of what was.  Sort of like a cake 'falling' in the oven.

Realization hit when I threw the box into the trash and saw
GOLDEN on it.  Suppose to say Holbein.

 The Scrapped Canvas

 One sheet of scrapped paint.

Someone had grabbed the wrong box when they packed my order. The only white acrylic I use is in a huge 32 oz container, or the large 64 oz container.

We invest much time in different things in our life...but how much time to be spend invested in our relationship with God? How much time one on one do you spend with the people you love? Investment in relationships is richest investment you can make...starting with your relationship with God.

Sisters in the Sand, Figurative painting by Texas Artist Laurie Pace

Sisters in the Sand
Commission Gift
20 x 20 inches  Oil on Canvas
©Laurie Pace Graphics One Design 1998-2011

This was painted from a photograph on a beach a long time ago.  I was suppose to do the painting last year but could not find where I have packed the photograph but I came across the sketches I had completed for the painting... so I was able to paint the picture. Two young sisters on the beach, the older one trying to pick up the younger one who is basically leery of the incoming water from the ocean.  The little one looks like she has on someone's t-shirt over her diaper or swimming suit.

Forgiveness

Seems like an easy thing, a good word, but oh so hard to deal with.  We often allow anger to cause bitterness in our lives. It is so easy to blame someone else for situations when at times we are at fault.  It is not that we need to forgive someone else, but that we need to ask for forgiveness from someone else.  In our mind's eye, we are always the hurt party, but perhaps it is us doing the hurting.

Over my years of life I had some pretty good role models in my spiritual growth. As strong as their words and lessons were, I still struggle with the sense of asking for forgiveness from others when in my own heart I feel they should be coming to me to ask my forgiveness.

This morning I was sound asleep in bed and suddenly was wide awake. Terry had been flip flopping and in his dream very busy... he kicked me. First time in 20 years.  I can get past the kicking, that is not even a thought that lingers...but then I was wide awake at 4:30 am.  I should say the squirrels were wide awake and they were chattering away in my head discussing things that definitely were making sure I was wide awake.   I began to toss and turn and try to refocus to drown out their conversations. I prayed. I counted backwards from 200.  I counted blessings... and finally at 5:30 I got up.  Sometimes that is the only way to hush those squirrels.

We all face situations in life where forgiveness must be a two way street.  Humans are very thin skinned as well as thick headed. There is a book I would like to order and read called "The Bounce Back Book".  Karen Salmansohn writes about relationships and how important it is to start forgiving and forgetting.  Like those rocks I wrote about picking up through my lifetime and stuffing them into my pockets...same with relationship issues.  When you allow issues to fuel anger and bitterness you live a very unhappy life. When you carry them around in your pockets it becomes impossible to smile and enjoy the day God has given you.

Here are some thoughts between Karen's suggestions and my comments.
1. Say a Prayer
If you believe we are all of God and of His love, you must believe that every person can find their way back to a happier place. She suggests when you feel harmed by someone's anger or actions, pray for them to find their way back to peace and joy.

2. Focus on Gratitude.  I like Karen's thoughts on this one.  She points out happiness must come from the inside. We cannot find it in the materialistic world. "If you allow your self-image to be at the mercy of unpredictable events and unreliable people, your happiness will be forever on a chaotic roller coaster ride."   She urges you to count blessings, which is something I do all the time... it is the best "Pick me up" I know to be reminded of what God has richly blessed me with in my life.

3. Look for the lesson.  I see this several ways but can accept Karen's thoughts as well. She refers to the Buddhists that if you are truly suffering it is a sign you are an old soul. The bigger your problems, the closer you are to enlightenment.  Testing like this for me is God strengthening me  and his nudging me to learn more coping techniques. This could include compassion, empathy, forgiveness, patience, etc.  We all need to continue growing and learning in life, or we are basically dead before our soul leaves the body.

4. Maintain Perspective.   I know that well as an artist. We ALL get trapped in boxes and we loose our perspective.  The box seems safer but it does not give you a clear perspective of what truly is WHOLE LIFE.  Challenging times are just that, limited events in your life. Do not allow them to overwhelm you or get those squirrels running so early in the morning.

5. Learn the lesson.  I love how Karen phrases this one, "Develop a 'student not victim' mentality." Isn't that the truth?  Live the experience. Learn from what happens and go forward in your life.

6. Let Go of Resentment   Karen quotes Carrie Fisher, "Resentment is the poison you swallow hoping the other person will die."  I know from experience if you dwell on situations you are giving POWER to the other person. You am allowing them to control you and your bad mood. You cannot be happy and fulfilled if you are grumbly and testy and finding fault with everyone.

7. Stay Centered.  I write often about centering in God. Spiritually connected to Him is where I find my peace. There is no room for hatred, anger or bitterness if you are bathed in His light.

8. Get Revenge Positively   This made me think of my grandmother that said, 'just kill them with kindness'.  Revenge does nothing. The more you dwell on the what ifs and your constant rerunning things in your head, the angrier you become. The situation or person controls you. You must create a new habit and stay focused on positive thoughts of being loving in your life...in your words and your actions with others. When you live this way you attract more positive things into your life.

Karen suggested the mantra, "Love, Forgiveness, Letting Go and Peace."  For me I have to have something with a bit more to it... maybe "My God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there's nothing my God cannot do."

GOD is mighty and He will guide you to set your heart free of the weight you carry.  Looks like a good read: Karen's book.

Happy Monday to all of you. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Live it to its fullest. SMILE and share that light with others.

JOYFUL

May this day be filled with joy. May you radiate God's love in your words and your touch as you share time with others.  Many of us here in the USA celebrate Fathers on this day.  As my younger brother says, it is an American Holiday to make people spend money, but cards and boost the economy.

Every day should be Father's Day and Mother's Day. Every day should be God's day.  No matter what is apart of the day, allow the joy deep inside of you to bubble out and contagiously spread to those around you.  The choice is always yours what to share with others.

God Bless
Laurie

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4 NIV

Here is the history of Father's Day from Wikipedia:
Father's Day is a celebration of fathers inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities. The first observance of Father's Day actually took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. It was organized by Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster several months earlier in Monongah, West Virginia, on December 6, 1907. It's possible that Clayton was influenced by the first celebration of Mother's Day that same year, just a few miles away. Clayton chose the Sunday nearest to the birthday of her recently deceased father.Unfortunately, the day was overshadowed by other events in the city, West Virginia did not officially register the holiday, and it was not celebrated again. All the credit for Father's Day went to Sonora Dodd from Spokane, who invented independently her own celebration of Father's Day just two years later, also influenced by Jarvis' Mother's Day.  Clayton's celebration was forgotten until 1972, when one of the attendants to the celebration saw Nixon's proclamation of Father's Day, and worked to recover its legacy. The celebration is now held every year in the Central United Methodist Church – the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was torn down in 1922. Fairmont is now promoted as the "Home of the First Father's Day Service"    A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "[singling] out just one of our two parents" In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.  In addition to Father's Day, International Men's Day is celebrated in many countries on November 19 for men and boys who are not fathers.
