Feelings urge us to open up quickly, explain ourselves fully, or move ahead before understanding has time to settle. Wisdom, however, invites us to slow down. It asks us to listen, observe, and wait. © Laurie Pace        Graphics One Design 2025 Merry Christmas Limited Foresight and a Faithful God After watching The Bishop’s Wife this morning, I was struck by the moment when the angel leaves and the minister is meant to forget the visit ever happened. It reminded me of something I once heard in a faith-based reflection—that we are limited in foresight. We do not truly see what lies ahead for ourselves or our families. Only God does. While we plan and hope, our Father alone holds the full picture of what is to come. That truth feels especially present at Christmas. The birth of Christ came quietly, without human certainty or control. Mary and Joseph could not foresee the full story, yet God’s purpose unfolded perfectly. His power is seen in creation, in His providence, and most clearly in Christ—power not meant to overwhelm us, but to guide us as we live and apply His Word daily. Long before Bethlehem, long before the manger, the prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of our Savior. More than 700 years before it came to pass, God promised a sign, and He kept it. Brokenness shows itself in many ways—quietly in the heart, and visibly in the world around us. Homelessness is real. Mental illness is real. And it can happen to any of us. Every day we pass people sleeping under bridges, in doorways, or wherever they can find a place to rest their head. They endure the cold of winter and the heat of summer, unseen by many and misunderstood by most. We live in a society fueled by billions of dollars in advertising, and nowhere is it more visible than during the holiday season. How that aligns with the birth of Jesus, I will never understand. Yet, this time of year especially, we seem to feel the pressure to need more, buy more, spend more. In reality, all that spending and buying doesn’t bring freedom—it brings more stuff. And the more stuff we accumulate, the heavier life becomes. Bulging drawers and closets. Utility rooms overflowing. Kitchen cabinets crammed full. Pantries stuffed. Linen closets where things tumble out when you open the door. So I find myself asking two questions: Why do we feel such a need to spend money?
