The Lotus... my first and only I have painted and it was painted as a gift for a good friend in NYC for his Mom in Singapore. Trying to decide my approach to this painting had me ditching the knife and picking up my brushes. I adjusted the colors on the lotus petals many times to push it to the perfect color.  And yes, I realize the angle of some of the lily pads is off in the back group, it holds up well as they float along and with those I used jewel tones for the pads and the water. It was a painting of precious jewels after that. It was also very large.  38 x 58 inches.  At the arrival to Singapore, it went to be framed. They put a simple frame around it and then defined it with a partial frame to pop the color of the Lotus.

Color is a huge part of my work. Even with this painting, the challenge remained to explore and discover content of flower, water and lily pads while remaining true to the content.

BE AWAKENED

Be awakened to Christ. Be awakened to life. Be awakened to truth. Currently the cultural groupthink easily leads us down different paths and most of them are not truth based.

"Each of us collects evidence to support our bias. We tend to move toward individuals and groups who think the same way as we do. It is human nature to seek out this bolstering of personal opinion. The problem with this way of living is that it creates an intellectual echo chamber. We only hear what we believe to be true in relation to our bias and with the support of those who agree with our opinion. As a result, we toss out any challenge to the facts of our evidence as irrelevant and untrue." Garris Elkins

I see this today in my circle of friends.  We are all seeking the truth of what is happening in our lives and the world. Each of us misses the pure understanding of the 'truth' diluted or influenced by our circle of friends or by social media or news reports. Our perception is inevitably bent one way or the other by these outside influences.

We remain confronted each day with our own lives as well as what is happening in the world. Is fear leading the way in your life? Fear has a way of sneaking into our lives and rooting. We must all find a way to reinforce ourselves to find peace and the joy in living.  Right now as you go about your day, share a smile (even in your mask), share a good morning, share a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday. Simply make the day better for others and you will find yourself happier.

Mixed Media Collage Horse Paintings by Texas Artist Laurie Justus Pace

© G.O.D. Laurie Justus Pace      Graphics One Design 2013 Horse Collage Fall 2013  12 x 18 inches Mixed Media on Canvas.  This was an intentional paint to imitate one of the 100 ponies I did in 2012. That poor little 8 x 10 pony was loved by a company to do very large prints and it was not here for me to even use to scan... so I created something with the same heart, a kindred spirit. The underlays are pages from a western book and then torn papers of different varieties were added along with stains of paint and purposeful areas of paint.  This would not be a painting I would do today, but the goal was to capture the spirit of the first painting. Laurie     © Laurie Justus Pace     Graphics One Design 2010 My Website   Thinking ahead to the Thanksgiving celebration next week, I remembered back to those previous dinners that I cooked, served, ate quickly, and cleaned up.  This is how I felt.  It is probably strange...even for me but I had the best fun sketching it out and painting it. We lost another dear family member this week. She has celebrated her 'continuation' day and is now with her mom and dad and her other cousins.  She leaves behind a family that will always celebrate her gentleness.  My aunt was special to all of us. She loved each of us dearly for who we were and was always ready with a hug or a 'good job'.    My memories are of breakfast pastries smeared with butter on top. It was not like they were not sweet enough as they were, but at her small kitch...

My life has the tendency to fall apart when I'm awake, you know?” Ernest Hemingway  I really enjoyed painting this scene. It was restful to me as the artist  and loved by our friends.  Sunday is the day of rest. I smiled when I found this in archives and thought it perfect for this day.  If you live in Texas you know that we still have 'rules' about not selling liquor before noon.  If you live in Texas and are in your late thirties and up, you might even remember Blue Laws.   Stores were simply NOT open...
