The Apollo with Queen Esther
“In an effort to be the change that I want to see in the world, I'm officially one of nine board of directors for @jalopybrooklyn #Theatre and #Music School in #RedHook. I'm so grateful to be a part of a performance space that's committed to #Americana and #folk music traditions worldwide. #.” ― Queen Esther @queenesthermusic (Instagram 7 Nov 2020)
It felt like a tale of two cities but it was more more like a tale of two musicians in two cities. It was in 2002 when my hubby brought home the New York newspaper several times a week that I came across an article on the Apollo Theater doing "Harlem Song" with Queen Esther starring in the production. I loved the cast photo and was determined to paint it, but not to sell it ever. I sent it to Queen Esther. It was the first time I truly painted a black person, but I loved to paint people and tell stories with my work.

Queen Esther was no different. Her love for music, people, writing, and performing allowed her to tell stories with her work. She was a young woman from the south that ended up north in NYC. I was 20 years older but at age 4 moved from the north to the south landing in Dallas, Texas. We both were musicians, performers, acting, and more... and we both loved to help others find their direction.
I encourage you to visit Queen-Esther.com Even this year in the midst of crisis and pandemic, Queen Esther remains working and championing in NYC. She is a leader for all black women in this world and I would easily say for ALL women in this world. Her music weaves stories from across time telling of joy and sadness, of history and past times of hurt, triumph and finally pure celebration.
We have visited throughout the years. She always invites Terry and I north to visit in NYC. We were there in 2006, and she was kind to my eldest son when he moved to Long Island in a new job position and knew absolutely NO ONE in NYC. She also took my youngest son and his wife on when they visited the big apple a few years ago. I consider her family and I wanted to share some light in this time of despair. Her music is solid! I hope you enjoy it.

"Then the king asked, “What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be given you.” “If it pleases the king,” replied Esther, “let the king, together with Haman, come today to a banquet I have prepared for him." Esther 5:4-5
