“The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image.” Thomas Merton
The thoughts scrambled today, but are about twisting things to fit our needs.
Back in the day that Jesus walked this earth and in his years of teaching, he was really up against it. By this time and through all the years before, the Pharisees were reported to be "a quiet group thought to be respectful to their elders and harmonious and affectionate in their dealings with others." At the same time they were thought to be defenders of the church and faith, but were they? the Pharisees would follow the guidance of their 'doctrine' and they interpreted the law. Through the years they evolved to a selective group of men that began to develop their own "brotherhood' patterns, thoughts and ways and not necessarily those of the church or of God's law.
The Pharisees were opponents of Jesus and the Christian movement. By this time they had developed their own private way of taking God's commands and twisting them to fit situations as well as supporting their habits and that began their twisted beliefs. They 'twisted God's love and His laws to fit their needs.'
Traditions of man should not change or invalidate God's word. Disregarding God's word leads to a downward spiral of twisting His words to our personal needs and situations. We should know the Bible and know God's laws. If we only have casual regard for them, the divide between right and wrong will grow widely and we will not be left standing on God's side.
We are called by Jesus to a higher standard. We keep 'traditions' that are man made, not of God's word or ways. An example is the Pharisees washings of hands continually as a ritual before doing things, including eating. Jesus responded in Matthew 10:11 "What goes into someone's mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them."
From this the main thought is to consider all of your traditions or ways to do things in your life or your family life. Your man-made traditions that come against God's law are not pure. People can look good on the outside, but what is inside is not always the same. Human traditions are not of God.
Mark 7: 9-13 'And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[a] your own traditions! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.” '
