I had so much fun doing one color into subject that I did another one. Combing Elements to create a Painting through color and composition. This Monday Lesson is about combing more elements. using color to create movement on the surface of this small canvas, I have no intent of what will be painted here.  I literally am basing the color application on good composition and movement along with balance. This is a small 9 x 12 inch board canvas and I am working the undercoating with acrylics. After the surface is dry, I began to use my finger in more wet acrylic paint and began to push around the surface trying to mold in my mind what I wanted to form on the composition.  As you know I paint a lot of horses so of course that is what came to mind. See if you can line these up to note where I saw the movement to create this piece.  If I looked long enough, I might have flipped the painting and created a floral piece. I wanted to leave it at the blue stage, but had to finish the journey. There were many more in between shots I could have shared but I know you get bored with some of the progress shots.   What was amazing was the back light and colors in the early dawn as the light was breaking through the woods. I can only imagine this wolf in the newly fallen snow from the night to look up to see the dawn.  Her coat is dusted with the snow, her fur fluffed out with her winter coat...a play of contrast in colors and in composition in this unique contemporary wolf painting. One of my wolf pieces sold and I was asked to paint another one similar. I always worry about the spirit of a painting when I am trying to capture a certain feeling and this one is truly developing it's own depth. Art Lesson using Line and Color    This week I want to work on an exercise to loosen your thoughts and inspire your creativity.  Painting is ahead but I want some foundation and work done before doing a lot of painting. You need to be using all the elements and having full grasp of different mediums at the same time. If I gave you the math problem of 8 + 3 = N, you know how to solve for N.  But how many ways can you get there?  That is limited. If I give you the art problem of Line + Color = N , N is limitless. You can do this with Paint, you can do this with crayons, you can do this with markers, you can do this with craypas or watercolors or anything. You can even collage using lines and color. This one spoke to me of a stormy day where the bad weather beings to break and sunset has begun.  The colors on this contemporary horse painting are the cool colors of rain with the sunset in the warm of soft yellows, bathed in the raindrops and water vapor left in the air.
