Rudy the Robot . . . lost, forgotten and obscured beneath the years. Journaling by Laurie Pace

My youngest brother and the 'hot' toy of the year...Rudy the Robot. Est maybe Christmas 1970.

“Childhood memories are sometimes covered and obscured beneath the things that come later, like childhood toys forgotten at the bottom of a crammed adult closet, but they are never lost for good.” ― Neil Gaiman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane

Memory is a type of mental time travel. It is unique to humans, but I cannot help but wonder if it does not also extend to dogs and cats somehow...or even horses.  For humans the earliest memories are sparse and most people have no memory prior to age 3, but some of us have distant hazy memories of age two. Usually memories this early have a cause and effect to them.

Christmas is notorious for drumming up thoughts of Christmas' past. The story of Scrooge has been passed on and read and shown as a movie over and over every year. Terry and I will record all of them and sit and watch them from the earliest to the latest on TCM. These are all based on an adaption of Charles Dickens' famous 1843 story.  The first one produced as a silent film was in 1908 and it has been lost. The 1910 version only runs 10 minutes and the Scrooge version produced in London was made in 1913. I could go through all of them...but easier for you to read more here. Scrooge takes his ride back to past Christmas' memories past, current and in the future.

Every year we cannot help but think of family that has died the past year or in earlier years and look back upon those special gatherings when they were part of the festivities. I have been cleaning out computer files of photos over the past 15 years and putting them on the CLOUD, trusting that means something.  They are woven in my head and somethings I cherish; when I think back to my Dad flying us all in for Christmas at their condo in Breckenridge, CO one year. The kids were all under 14 and they had the best time learning to ski and enjoying this special gift of a trip to be with family at an away destination.

Deep in the recesses of our minds are those memories.  Many lost, some forgotten but the most important ones clear in thought and vivid in color.  So as you move into this holiday season, put your best heart forward and make this memory count for tomorrow.

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Micah 5:2
