“And then one student said that happiness is what happens when you go to bed on the hottest night of the summer, a night so hot you can't even wear a tee-shirt and you sleep on top of the sheets instead of under them, although try to sleep is probably more accurate. And then at some point late, late, late at night, say just a bit before dawn, the heat finally breaks and the night turns into cool and when you briefly wake up, you notice that you're almost chilly, and in your groggy, half-consciousness, you reach over and pull the sheet around you and just that flimsy sheet makes it warm enough and you drift back off into a deep sleep. And it's that reaching, that gesture, that reflex we have to pull what's warm - whether it's something or someone - toward us, that feeling we get when we do that, that feeling of being safe in the world and ready for sleep, that's happiness.” ― Paul Schmidtberger, Design Flaws of the Human Condition

Here it is November and I am posting Hot Summer Nights.  It is an archival painting that is hugely one of my favorite.  The beauty of blogging is choosing the art, the quote and the Bible verse and figuring out how to mesh it all together. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. The quotes I post are always attached to the paintings or the photos I post.  Sometimes the Bible verse fits and sometimes the verse does not.

Here it is interesting because the readings in Hebrew this past week was one of safety and security and how God provides and cares for each of us. When I read the quote I truly loved the sentiment that pointed to my heart the constant struggle of things 'not right with the world' and how we go from needing something to fulfill us constantly. The constant movement of media, of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter... Youtube, television... all social media. Our eyes are constantly searching and moving and seeking the next best thing, never stopped to be still and comfortable right where we are.  Sometimes you begin to slide into a comfort zone and a commercial zaps in and you are back wide eyed taking it all in. We seem to relish the bad luck of others we watch through social media... and we want to see the winners win and bask in their victory.  Is it real or is it all a hoax or something that is made to entertain you.

Why do you need to be entertained?

Can you unplug and break that addiction to your phone, your ipad or your computer? Yes I know that means you won't be here reading these words, but my friend, you need to be reading God's Word. I hope I am pointing you there!  Your stress level will fall. Your weight will fall because you will not binge eat that entire bag of potato chips or the half full bag of cookies while you lock your eyes on Facebook or that movie or channel hopping.  What will it take to feel safe without the need of all of the stimuli?

Hebrews 12: 15 "Look after each others so that none of you will miss out on the special favor of God. Watch out that no bitter root of unbelief rises up among you, for whenever it springs up, many are corrupted by its poison."
