On the way to church yesterday we were hurtling down the back country roads viewing land around us still void of leaves with spring just beginning to arrive.  I noticed a house off to my right I had never seen before.  It was built facing to the sides so the front and back were not in view of the road. I could see a nice pond in the back and the house was high up from the pond with a beautiful deck. There were stairs down to the pond... LOTS of stairs.  The house was immaculate and so beautiful nestled in the cove of trees about 300 yards off the road in a slight valley.

 Wonder who lives there?

We turned onto Hwy 115 and there was a quaint soft blue frame house off to the left. It was on a slight rise surrounded by trees and neat as a pin.  I commented to Terry how beautiful the blue color was on the wood of the house and the white shutters framed it all off beautifully. Reminded me of my grandmothers farm altho she did not have a light blue house.  It was just quaint and very comforting.

Wonder who lives there?

We go through the day everyday passing houses along our ways... and passing even more people we do not know.

Wonder who lives there?

When it comes to people, it still applies...I wonder who lives there?  Why kind of person are they? Do they like apple pie? Do they enjoy roast beef on Sunday? Do they prefer baked potatoes or French fries? Do they follow Jesus?

Can you really tell anything about someone if you only see them for a brief moment in passing?  There are a few hints.. did they smile at you and share a tiny connection? Were they on their cell phone texting or talking? How were they dressed?  Can you tell anything about the folks in the image above?

There are thousands of visual hints that can point you in a direction of answering who lives there...but until you sit and share conversation heart to heart, you truly do not know. What kind of visual traits do you display to others?

Share a smile and a kind word today whenever you have the chance. Don't keep your beliefs hidden behind your outside look...let God's light shine from you into others. Actions can speak louder than words...but if you can share the word...do it.

PROTECTED from myself.

Yesterday I did not work on the two little girls. I got up Saturday morning with the intention of spending about two hours on the computer and getting my body outside to work in the yard. When Terry didn't get up, I got tangled further in the www.artistsoftexas.blogspot.com redoing some of the content and the next thing I knew it was almost 11:30 am.

I spent the next hour kicking myself for allowing that  to happen. I hate wasting time inside on the computer when I could be outside taking in God's glory.   I spent about an hour with the cloud hanging over me, feeling discouraged and disappointed in myself.  I gradually begin talking to myself to recenter and find my spot with God. I had the mind's eye thought that I could successfully do this and I was going to follow through.  It took about two hours, but the balance came back and I was back in a good place emotionally.

I will not paint when I am in a negative mind frame. Nothing positive comes out of it. No matter where you are or what is happening around you, you must learn to allow those negative thoughts to roll through you. Begin breathing in God's breathe of life and slowly find a quiet place to talk to Him.

You are His beloved child. The very heart of you is secure in His serenity that Christ's Spirit remains at your core being. From this inner warmth and belief comes protection from those negative thoughts and happenings.   I was able to return to my day, smiling and enjoying the afternoon with Terry.  Allow your peace to maintain your presence.

PRAYING FOR OTHERS

One of the most joyous gifts of painting commission work is the spiritual connection you develop with the new collector.  You truly begin to learn more about them and as you paint and share comments; a small relationship begins to bud.  I love this part of the gift as it allows me to connect with both God and the collector.  I pray deeply before starting  a painting and always before I work on it, sometimes during and always as I am finishing up.

This commission piece I am doing honors the life of a woman lost from cancer to her husband and family.   The husband has shared so much of her "fast progressing journey" with cancer as well as how grounded she was in God. Her faith was strong and her love for others (she was a PHD in counseling) was second in her life. She was always caring for those around her. She was one of several sisters and she psychologically and spiritually connected with my original painting seven years ago. She loved it enough that is was a screen saver on her computer for many years there after.  There is a tiny glimpse of the original picture above... I have it hanging on the top left corner as I paint.  The composition has the two girls alike, as is the path, but the girls are doing different things, the dresses are different colors and the path is lined by different elements. The choice of sky is early morning instead of the misty fog in the original. It was that misty fog that hid what was ahead on the stone path. This painting needed a focus of light ahead.  Coming from the dark of the garden into His light.

My reasons for choosing the early golden orange sky was the feeling of seeing the light and beauty of heaven in its shining glory. The husband said blue was not one of his wife's colors so we chose to follow with a warm palette in the dresses the girls were wearing. The older girl wears red. For me symbolically I associate red with the blood of Jesus, knowing that He died for us to save us. I know that the woman I honor gave everything she had to others when they were in need, just as Jesus would have done.

The youngest girl carries a basket and she is filling it with flowers along her way. For me this symbolized those sisters his wife had left behind still on their earthly journey.  The older girl, symbolizing his wife... strides ahead confidently into the sunrise climbing the path toward the huge old tree that beckons her forward. She goes before to safely mark the way in their walk. She has left behind a rose on the stone bench where they had paused in their journey.  Somewhere prior she had left her basket, feeling encumbered on the walk by life's 'collections'. She let go of all of it but one single rose she carries in her hand (for her husband). She faces the light in sheer delight without fear as she heads down the path to the light, her sister safely in her shadow, still gathering flowers in her life basket.

In this larger composition, I placed the girls balanced in the center where the oldest is just to the right of center pressing ahead on the stone path... the younger one falling behind. I chose roses for the baskets because of the thorns. Life seems to contain unsuspecting thorns doesn't it?

I want this painting to connect for this man both spiritually for the belief in the glory and the light we yearn for in our lives as we grow closer to God, as well as the connectivity to family and friends that we love.

When I pray for others, no matter what the situation, I sit quietly opening up my senses to the Spirit surrounding me.  Connecting to God in this way I can pray for others in need, both for those I love and know, as well as for those I do not know.  I could not face a day without His joy connecting into my life. I want Him to be in yours as well.  I am confident knowing that He answers all prayers, maybe not the way I want Him to, but He does answer and we must have faith to know He will make all things as they should be.

 Layer by Layer.

As I progress with this painting I end up layering the paint, building up both texture and value depth through the glazing of translucent colors mixing with vibrant under-laid colors. Tomorrow I will start on the girls and I am excited.

Isn't life like that? Layer on Layer? I do not even want to think of how many layers I have over my lifetime.

Every day we probably add a hundred layers or more in experience and growth. Each of us should be quite dimensional by now.  Sometimes like in painting, you may be tempted to use a cover layer to hide a mistake. In art and painting there are no mistakes, just creativity. In living and believing in God as the main source of all, there are no mistakes there either.

We go through the days of our lives enduring growth pains and situations that we truly do not want to ever see again. From each of those 'layers' comes experience and a bit more wisdom.

Think about your 'layers' today. He already knows what He has for you.

I made more progress on the girls in the garden painting. Terry came in and took a picture as I working in the far left lower corner. I had just finished the rock wall behind the bench and was putting in shadows behind the girls. This painting definitely makes me look forward to spring planting and the flowers coming up in the back yard.

Nature's Beauty
The earth is blessed with the beginning of Spring. Debbie Lincoln put on facebook yesterday that she had early signs of bluebonnets in her yard. That is the Texas State Flower.. they are a sign of spring here in the Lone Star State.

Reaching out past the boundaries of the small town we live in, the rest of the state has the lower part of the Rocky Mountains, Big Bend area, the Gulf coast, the central plains and the Piney Woods of east Texas. We are blessed here with forests, oceans, mountains, prairies, beaches, plateaus and more. How can one person see it all in one life time?

Every moment your eyes take in new sights of God's beauty at work through the seasons and the land changes. Slow down as spring arrives and literally drink in the beauty of the simple things in life as the earth awakens to Spring

Renew your spirit in the Father who brings this majesty to you. Open your heart to His many gifts and joys.

 GRATITUDE OPENS THE HEART

Gratitude is defined by Wikipedia:
"Gratitude is a state or feeling of appreciation for anything. It could be a relationship, abundance, state of health, personal or public blessings, there is no limit to what gratitude could be applied to.  -  Many feel that gratitude itself has a power to it. That as we appreciate something in this way it expands"

When I looked it up in Wikipedia, I loved the last line, "That as we appreciate something in this way it expands."

YES YES YES.  I like this thought that there is a continuation that spreads and grows with a positive cycle. We have many simple things to be grateful for in every day. A few would be food, shelter and family.

Never get so caught up in life that you take them for granted. Appreciate your family and friends. Appreciate the material blessings in life that do come your way. As you give gratitude your heart opens more to give back to others so that they receive.

The continuum of giving and receiving provides double blessings for you and those around you.  Your joy and gratitude overflow to abundantly bless others around you. God is listening.   Gratitude has a power for sure... it expands exponentially out to the world.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity.... It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”  Melody Beattie

Start your day with a shift in perspective... find something you are grateful for as you begin the day and as you end the day.

This was painted similar to a piece I did last year with a single horse in it.
My reference photo as two horses in it so I decided to paint both of them in it this time.  I think I am done, but will look at it one more time later today.

 One of those mornings...
When you wake up at four a.m. and cannot go back to sleep.  I chose to tiptoe out of the bedroom early this morning and work on my backlog of computer things.  The goal was to get it done so I would have time to walk this morning. We walked yesterday about two miles... about an hour walk around the lake shore drive by us.

It was cool with the wind blowing but still feeling warm at near seventy degrees. What drew my attention was the symphony of the trees. Here at the lake we have tall pine trees, short oak trees and probably at least 30 different species of trees.  So when the wind blows they all have their own unique sound and together they blend in harmony swaying and leaning in the breeze.

Would that not be great if people could be that way?  Bending in the breeze of problems, turmoil and illness.  Bending and not breaking from the weight of the negative things around them.  Allow the breath of God to gently rock them during those harsh times. Then as they bend, the harmony of being with others a delightful sound of joy.

Listen today for the sound of the wind in the trees and see if you can hear God.

DIVINE ORDER...

Coming home always feels good.  Arriving in the house last night to the song-tweets of our birds and the bounding Paddy Dog at the door barking a greeting does a lot for the weary traveler. Thank goodness for a great house sitter, clean floors, fed animals and birds and a pitcher of homemade tea in the frig.  It feels like divine order to me!

How easy it is at times to see things as we want to see them and not as God has them laid out.  There is a definite difference between His order and our order. In order to see God's plan for us we must believe it to be.  The connection is first made from the heart to the mind and on to the physical form.  I say the heart because I believe that is where the Spirit has it's beginnings inside of me. I am spirit led from my heart because it flows naturally.  I believe for me it cannot be from my mind as my mind would get in the way trying to figure things out differently and would run any connection from the Spirit to do it my way.

Be mindful to give thanks with complete faith that God's divine order is ever present in your life right now. He is mindful of the desires of your heart so give thanks this day to Him in complete faith and trust; know He will provide abundant blessings to your life.

Please stop by and read about my May Workshop in gorgeous East Texas at a very special retreat.  I would love to have you attend and it matters not what level artist you are...you will grow, be challenged and learn a lot about who you are as a person and as an artist.

Exciting moments in life often leave treasured memories.

Shopping at the Evil Empire gets to me to begin with, but going there with Tink added new dimension.

Terry and I are NOT Walmart shoppers and we consider it the Evil Empire for several reasons... so many products NOT made in the USA and the store presents so much temptation to buy and buy and buy. Shelves of temptation. BUT that is where we went with the Tink... to buy her some new play shoes. Her room swallowed up her old ones and she had on her reserve shoes.

We breezed through the card aisle to grab a TINKERBELL birthday card..for guess who.  AND we bought one for mommy too. Then it was off to the kids area to look for Tinkerbell shoes...and on the way some clothes fell in the basket and a white hat with SWEET TINK on it.  Oh yes, add in a new Tink purse, a Tink Wallet and a Tinkerbell Blanket.

On the shoe aisle we encountered more effects of the Evil Empire.  She spotted the white Mary Janes with Tinkerbell flying across the toes about the time I was trying on some nifty sparkly jobs that easily velcro on.

What we had not contemplated was her desire NOT to remove the shoes. We had to check out with her wearing one of each.  Back to the car with the new hat on and two new pair of shoes dangling from her feet.

Once we were in the car she made the 'I am hungry' noises and we headed to a new Mexican Restaurant only a block away.  Rumor has it Tink loves Mexican food.
Are we there yet?
(New hat and new shoes...old sunglasses)

Every child born in Texas is raised near a Mexican Restaurant and eventually are exposed to rice and re fried beans. Tink happens to like salsa too. Can you tell by the picture?   She ate two entire chicken tenders with almost ALL of her beans and rice.  There was not much left on the plate when we headed out.  She pushed her plate away and said, "Home Bampa."

She grabbed her hat, her glasses and her water to go... and we were on our way home for a short afternoon nap.

I looked at Terry across the table and said, "Can you feel the joy?"  He grinned and leaned across the table and gave me a big kiss... "Yep" he replied.   Tink clapped her hands in delight,  "MORE?"

I wanted to  share my "joy" of this precious child.  God has chosen her to be  part of our family and we are truly blessed.

This pure joy is testimony of the living, loving Christ Presence in our lives.

I give thanks to God for this child and this gift of joy.

His Palette of Colors varies in each of our lives.

No two of us are created exactly the same.  I think we spend so much time finding fault in others that we miss the beauty in their palette. When God created each of us, He carefully chose how He 'knitted' together our pieces and what colors were in our individual palettes.

Terry found the Tink in her room this morning trying to choose her colors in her palette, but it was a dry attempt with no water.  Watercolors do not work dry.
I compromised  and gave up cleaning the house for the big party tomorrow and sat down at the table to paint with her. I always carry my watercolors with me.
She was delighted and for the next hour she plied her paper with lots of purple and pinks.  She is both a cool palette and a warm palette.

She finished this masterpiece for her mom's birthday which is also this weekend. Double parties all the way... good cake and ice cream too! Wish you were here.

Tink truly turned more to the violets and deep pinks. She was not much on yellow or red or orange.  I think she will be a cool color palette child.

Look around in your home and your closet and see what colors are apart of the JOYFUL celebration.  What colors are in your palette?

If you can attend my workshop in May, we will be examining color and what it means in our lives. We are each uniquely different and learning to celebrate who we are is often hard to do.  Come and join me in May.  It will be a restful vacation of healing time, sharing and learning at Selah Ranch. Book early so you have your choice of room... and be ready for good food and good friends.

There is something in the air....

FLOATING.... light as a cloud and crystal clear... on the wind and not so near.

Childhood memories come tumbling back on the wind blowing around us. Closing my eyes I can feel a bubble brush upon my check. It suddenly popped, leaving a soapy lightness kissing my cheek.

Bampa sits on the porch making bubbles with his sweet granddaughter. His patience never ending for over an hour as she chased bubbles across the yard.

Simplicity in the play. Beautiful crystal bubbles in all sizes dancing through the air as small hands reach up to, stretching in hope to grasp the elusive sphere floating upward to God.

God's breath of wind fills each  of these crystal spheres. Simplicity. The breath of God... have you felt it on your face recently? With winter leaving us and spring arriving, the wind is filled with sweet scents of new blooms and clean air. Simplicity.

 Shhh...its a secret.
Betcha don't realize it...

There is a secret to simplicity. There is a way to bring your life under 'control'.

Shhh...be quiet and listen.

In 17th century France, Brother Lawrence, a humble monk serving in a monastery as a cook, discovered how to put God First in everything he did. This went way beyond the typical rituals and prayers observed in the monastery, God was first in the kitchen as Brother Lawrence worked. God was first in all his conversations with others in the monastery.  God was first in every aspect of his life.

RESULT:   A SIMPLE LIFE.

 GOD IS ALWAYS PRESENT:
Here is some of what Brother Lawrence wrote: "God has infinite treasure to bestow.  When He (God) finds a soul penetrated with a lively faith, He pours into it His graces and favors plentifully; there they flow like a torrent."

TALK WITH GOD in a quiet intimate way. Give continual silent praise and thanksgiving for His love. Reaffirm it constantly.  Brother Lawrence refers to this as 'habitual, silent and secret conversation of the soul with God." Brother Lawrence found pure joy from doing this.

CONFESS or RELEASE your mistakes to God. Commit to Him that you will strive to do better in life.  Brother Lawrence never wasted time feeling bad or punishing himself for his mistakes.  His full trust was in God's forgiveness and knowledge that His grace would help Him become a better person.  It did.

So I leave you with words to keep close at heart. When you begin to feel hurried, pressed or frustrated, STOP and begin to turn your words and thoughts to God. This is really hard to do, but you must try it.  Find things to praise Him for in your life. Count your many blessings. When you turn to Him and stop thinking about what was bothering you, your problems will resolve themselves and answers will come.

GOD IS GUIDING YOU NOW.

GOD IS WITH YOU.

The only thing you have to do every day, in every moment is focus on God. Keep it simple...with God.
