'Colors in the Sun' Horse Equine Painting by Laurie Pace

The Painting:  I am back on tiny canvas doing pieces for an upcoming show at the Dutch Art Gallery.  It will be the first show of the Artists of Texas aka Daily Painters of Texas.  This is Holbein Duo Oils on panel board.  These are so easy to slip into a frame to hang.  A perfect size to begin to collect.

The Thought: Every day is filled with potential.  Despite what you think upon rising, it is a new day and it has every positive possibility you could ever dream of.  The only thing that stands in the way of this new day is often you.  We all tend to draw on our fears and negativity and feelings of failure that we assign ourselves.  If we assign it to ourselves, perhaps we should make a sign and hang it around our neck declaring ourselves as unworthy losers.
God does not believe so at all.   There is divine potential in every moment of the day.  It is up to us to open our arms and hearts to its existence. We must keep the vision positive that God is there working for our best and it is our open heart that reaches out to impact others.  This all affects our own well-being.
Give yourself a break today and lift up your hands to receive His blessings. Divine possibilities are all around you. Are you ready to receive them?

The Painting:  Silky oil on Panel... delicate color palette to portray this Arabian beauty.  Holbein Duo Oils.
The Thought:  This morning I had an adrenalin rush when Terry came into the bedroom as I was stretching awake and he said, "I will always be here to protect you from bad things."  Immediately my brain jumped into high gear thinking in a panic mode...what happened for him to say this to me?
Seems like when the ground shakes for an earthquake folks begin to panic seeking protection and a safe place.  I read a story about a little boy that was swinging in the yard as the earthquake hit and his mom hurried outside to bring him inside.  He told her "I am moving like the earth, I can't feel it."
Seems like he side stepped the natural order of panic that follows scary things or bad news.

In the bible David felt fear when King Saul tried to kill him.  He wrote Jonathan, his best friend of the heart and poured out his fear that death was stalking him.  David cried out to the Lord and it was here he found God to be his rock, his fortress and his stronghold.
Where do you go in times of stressful events?  As a survivor I go into panic sending myself into a clear thinking mode to handle what is laid upon the table.  I truly wish I could tell you my first thoughts are to pray, but they are not.  It is still something I am working on.  God is our only stabilizer.
Be anchored in Him always.

The PaintingBring out the shovels... I used them on this piece.  Actually it was the palette knife and very heavy oils. I have not painted this heavy in oils all summer because of humidity. This painting may take days to dry.  I love the musical feel of colors as the flowers are each dancing in the evening breeze.

The Thought: Often when I am working or painting a piece and I think I have a direction, I suddenly realize as I proceed into it that I am lost.  Fortunately most of the time God knows where I am and out of what seems to be building chaos comes to be a beautiful painting that just 'appeared'.
Life is often like that too.  Not only when we are living in chaos and we find wonderful moments or silver linings,  but also when we are working diligently and realize all the work we are doing will never be seen by anyone.  How could anyone appreciate our hard work?    Do you ever think, "Humm, maybe someone will come in and see me working and lend a hand.  No one realizes what all I do."
God knows. He truly knows and the best work is often done behind the scenes where no human ever knows.  God's strength and is with you in your tasks today.  You are never alone.  Others may never see you and how you are working this day, but you are serving and doing your job.

God's got your back.

The Painting: This is the second in the series of negative space from a video tape lesson.  Of course the deep dark purples and blues are my favorite colors.  This painting is a large one,  on a 24 x 36 inch canvas.

The Thought:  What do you invest your time in everyday? What exactly is your top priority? There has to be something you put in your heart, strength, direction and soul in doing daily.   I know a good friend of mine now living in Ohio and she gives it all 100 percent to her two little boys in her life.  Sometimes I have to remind her there is still herself and her husband that she needs to keep in focus as well.  It is so difficult with little ones to give back to yourself or to any other relationship.
I remember well those days of children ( and now we have a new 17 year old!) but those little ones that require constant attention. They cannot pop a pizza in the oven or microwave  a snack on their own.
Whatever is your priority... define it and make sure you are on target with where your energy should be directed this day. Face it with an attitude of gratitude and you will attract nothing but GOOD GOOD GOOD to you and yours.  By giving the inner spirit the chance to light out to others, you are allowing God to light the way from you to others.  You are shining.
When you are truly in your element your priority is what you are doing and you do it without expecting anything in return. In actuality your receive even more without realizing it. You become a magnet of goodness and each act of doing for others and working on that priority will increase the positive energy flowing to you.

Your goodness is unlimited...keep that attitude of gratitude today.

Laurie

The Painting: This one was on the easel being worked on for over a week. It began with a charcoal sketch.  From there I work in acrylics first establishing a rather sherbet looking painting.  It had all the colors in the wonderful rainbow sherbet.  I dabbled on it on and off; Then Terry gave his view and I added more values. Then two days ago I begin in earnest to pile on the color with my knife. That is my joy and abundance...and here you have simply Abundance.

The Thought: I often write about the squirrels that live in our brains and run the exercise wheel usually at night when we are trying to sleep.   Seems we allow concerns of the day and doubt from our activities to creep into our peace of mind making it difficult to let it all go as we enter into the quiet time our soul needs to rest and be totally immersed in the peace of God.

Many nights when flopping restlessly on the bed my brain begins searching for those repetitive phrases and prayers we use daily.  One that I use during the day is simply the Nicene Creed.  It is rather heavy for use at night to fall asleep.   "Be still and know that I am God" is a good night time mantra.
In Lamaze training they took us through the muscle relaxing chore of starting at your toes and tightening them, (While breathing in) and then slowly letting them relax while breathing out.  You work your way up your body with different muscle groups, breathing in to tighten and out to relax.  At night you could use this and insert the mantra between each group. Slowly your squirrels will stop and rest their actions and a peace will begin to fill your mind and body.

It is hard during the day to just STOP.  STOP and be at peace. We all need this peace in the center of our hearts both day and night.  From there it will spread out to our thoughts and our actions. It completes the cycle of Mind and heart, body and emotions, and then actions. This is a very powerful peace.

May His inner peace fill your heart, your spirit, your mind and your actions today.

The Painting: This is another in the Wash Arabian Series. Darker foreboding colors of cold winter...almost icy in a sense. I am not sure this one is done...still debating.

The Thought: Purpose and Priorities..... those are the words gelling in my brain this morning. Maybe add a third work, Purpose, Priorities and Prosperity. The Triple P's.

As we are individuals; we are made with a uniqueness true to just ourselves. There is no one else like us. We are YOU-nique as I always tell my art students. When God created us, He had a purpose for us to be here. He also has a priority list of what we are here to do in our lifetime. Some of us take longer than others to get to where we are suppose to be accomplishing His list. Many times we miss the entire picture and miss our mission in life, or our purpose.

If prosperity is to be I would think the priorities and purpose must be in place. I told our youngest son that it took my lifetime so far to fully understand letting go and letting God. The words have been uttered from my mouth countless times over the years but truly walking in faith and letting go is another story.

If you are on the right path in life, you will see amazing results. This does not mean "easy life, or easy street" but it does mean you will grow spiritually, emotionally and be physically sound. Things will begin to fall in place and you will actually see signs that your are on the path of abundance.

Abundance is not necessarily MONEY...but abundance in life, in living without worry and stress. You will be enriched through His working in your life and the associations you have with others as you work in their lives.

Follow the path of purpose today. Give God the lead and follow.

The Painting: Well hopefully you recognize the prepaint from several weeks ago. Then finally I was able to do the full painting. I will do one more that will be a third painting as I complete exploring the color palette of the first small prepaint. So stay tuned. Meanwhile if you like what you see, make an offer today. As we get into September we get into the four months before the holidays and thoughts of special gifts for those you love are important. I "Pay" it forward quite a bit over this time period.

The Thought: The bathroom continues on its rebuild. Terry has to do the shower step and the rest of the floor and then we seal the grout. I think after that we get to shower. YEAH. And maybe he can enjoy his last week of vacation.

Today I want you to remember the words, I CAN. Everything is possible with God. Through you He works to reach out to others and to make things happen in their lives. You can make a difference to many other people, to some you know and to some you may never met. Realizing there is a huge picture we never actually see, we have to go forward in faith accepting that God is in control and we can and will do all things through Him. His spirit abides within each of us.

It began when He gave you life. From this moment forward you begin to move and react to the world around you. God provided wisdom as He began to reveal complex things through your every day living and your knowledge began to grow. He gave you peace and rest to restore your soul and spirit to enable you to live fully in every moment of your waking day.

Truly nothing is lacking in your life, unless it is the simple act of your opening your heart and hands to Him.

The Painting: This is another from the archives you might say. I am painting this morning in my studio as school has started and things may begin to settle into a pattern now!

The Thought: Emotions. We were in the mall shopping for school clothes and our daughter leaned over and said "the Emos will be leaving soon..." I had absolutely no clue to the meaning of this remark and sent her a puzzled look back. "the Emos...?" I was then educated by her and older son Morgan that Emos are the new generation of EMOTIONAL people. EMOS. They blog and share their feelings on the internet. She felt they retreat early in the evenings to ponder the day and their feelings.

I began to research this new word and new movement and found it to be old and rooted into the 1980's and punk-rock msic. It is characterized by melodic expressive lyrics. Originally in the mid 80's it was the PUNK movement of Washington DC pioneered by bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace. It has evolved through the nineties and now is here stronger in our younger generation. There is even an internet page on how to become and dress and be an Emo. You have to appreciate the music and be introspective, thoughtful and emotional.

Here is part of the list on what you need to dress Emo:

Things You'll Need

  • Dark colored skinny jeans (black, dark blue, and red are acceptable)
  • Band/graphic tee shirts
  • Black hoodie
  • Converse/Vans sneakers
  • Studded belts (preferably black and white)
  • Black tote bag/messenger bag (with or without pins)
  • Accessories (facial piercings included)
  • Eyeliner (boys and girls)
  • Wrist bands
  • Emo music on your iPod/MP3 player
  • Lots of black with neon clothing
(http://www.wikihow.com/Be-Emo)

I am beginning to think I do not get out enough. I am definitely out of touch... but I consider myself emotional. I do not think at this stage in my life I am ready for the look they describe. Makes me wonder in my belief as a believer if there is some type of dress code or symbol or what to signify my "group" or emotions. I wear a cross around my neck. My wedding band is a James Avery version of the wedding band that Catherine gave Martin Luther when they were married. It is loaded with symbolism. Click the picture for more info on the ring.

That is my outerwear that might alert someone to my personal beliefs.

In truth it would be my actions that would signify the truth of who I am. Actions speak louder than words, or symbols or clothes.

I challenge you to extend kindness today, even in those tough moments of hurt or anger. Rise above the gut emotional human outcry and breath in the peace of the Lord. May He fill you with His grace today.

The Painting: This is an old painting, but one I pulled from Archive to do a larger version of for this next week. I love the play of colors and movement of the brush. This was a small painting and the new one will be quite large...perhaps 30 x 30 in size.

The Thought: The hustle is on for Terry to finish the bath as the appraiser is due on Wednesday morning. My responsibility will be making sure the rest of the house literally sparkles and I have a list of ALL the updates we have done. I may have to do a spreadsheet and a slide show....before and after for him. Hummm

Before and After. Gives thought to many situations in life, like what was your life before you turned 21 compared to life after 21. OR, what was life like before children compared to after children? What was life before you knew and acknowledged the Father compared to walking with Him daily?

If you had to prepare for an Appraisal from Him, how would you score on a 1 to 10 scale? Do you walk the walk?

The Painting: Another piece from the workshop tape I have been watching. Using negative space to carve out positive pieces....fun to work with color and thick oil paint.

The Thought: Not any painting right now as I am busy with school registration and unpacking and settling in. Terry continues the work on the bathroom...slow but sure...very steady and with out complaint. The best part of our vacation is the sleep. I have found I can actually sleep more than five hours in a row. We slept in yesterday morning until 8:30 am. ANYONE that knows me knows I am a five a.m. riser. I told Terry I could get use to the 8-9 hours a night of sleep.

God intends for us to be rested. I am the world's worst of always working, getting things done and forgetting about myself and my body's needs. When I do this I am not respecting my body and its needs. Healthy eating, healthy exercise and a full night of rest. How many of you actually get this? I do not. I am guilty of mistreating myself.

Think about yourself this morning. Are you taking care of the body the Lord gifted you with? Are you overweight? Are you exercising? Are you sleeping at night? Now figure out how you can adjust the things you need to in order to get your body back to balance.

Be kind to yourself. The Psalm I enclosed at the end is a favorite. From me to you...

The Painting: Strength in color and in body. This mare was filled with curiosity as I painted. Can you tell that? Oil on Canvas and thick paint without impasto.

The Thought: We welcomed a new daughter to our family. It has been a journey of two years. Today I will go through the doors of the high school Terry and I graduated from, and enroll her in classes. We spent the day yesterday, moving her things to Dallas and gathering up things from Target like alarm clocks, hangers, etc. Rejoice with us... God is good.

We are here to give of ourselves to each other in this earthly journey. No man is an island. Give when you can give and share a smile as it will lighten the day for both of you. I know not what the morrow brings, but I know tonight Terry and I will pray for God's constant direction in our lives. Decisions and direction for each of us is an unknown as we face new struggles each day. The struggle is less when God is walking with you.

I sang the song several times yesterday....

My God is so good, so strong and so mighty, there's nothing my God cannot do.
My God is so good, so strong and so mighty, there's nothing my God cannot do.
The mountains are His, the rivers are His, the stars are His wonderment too.
My God is so good, so strong and so mighty, there's nothing my God cannot do.

We are still on Vacation. Terry is still tiling the bathroom. I did not realize this would be such a daunting task but he is a gifted mason and very particular along the way. He rips it out if he doesn't like it and doesn't think anything of it. I guess I am that way when Painting. If I have a painting almost finished and it is not working, I do not think twice before wiping it off the canvas and beginning it again.

I am glad God only did that once to mankind. He wasn't happy with where we were and sent the huge floods. I am glad He does not do that to each of us whenever we appear to be going in a wrong direction or mess up our lives. We seem to do it to ourselves. We have choices everyday on what we choose to do and how we choose to react to things happening around us.

Choose your battles carefully.

'Thunder Run' Equine Horse Painting by Laurie Pace

'Thunder Run'

© Laurie Justus Pace Graphics One Design 2009

The Painting: Not sure if it is done yet. It began with washes of deep blues and violets and then on the very wet canvas I used my fingers to form a horse in the loose water. From that point I began to see the movement and the motion of it stretching forward in the run. Layers of acrylic followed and the play of colors brought out the liveliness.

The Thought: Still on work vacation. I truly dislike these. The shower was suppose to be worked on in July and Terry is still putting in 12-14 hours a day tiling. He finished the back wall of the shower with all the intricate piecing and today will begin back with the large chunk pieces of tile. He has a wall about 8 x 6 feet to go and then about 6 sq feet on the floor to finish up. After that comes the layer of mortar that goes on top of the shower pan and then that tile. Still have not heard from the bank to set up the appraiser coming. We have to be very close to finished when he does come. We have two weeks left of vacation.

One of the reading things a friend sent me talked about the doer and the doing. "the enthusiasm is half of the journey to success and all of the journey to joy." I have to agree with that watching Terry do this shower. Despite the grueling task he faces with it, he has remained amazing joyful on the journey. He has taken this on with true gusto.

Life has to be taken on that way to fully enjoy it as well. If you are so busy doing so many things, you dishonor the real things in life you are called to do. Spreading yourself thin in so many areas accomplishes very little. You will end up doing a half-hearted job just to get through and move on to the next thing.

Today I challenge you to do one complete thing with "gusto"... do it with joy even if it is not your favorite thing. Joy is there for the taking, so why make the journey without it?

The Painting: This was a special commission piece for a truly loved soccer player. This is the style painting that I really enjoy but these pieces take months to finish. Careful planning and layers of thinner paint build to the excitement on the canvas.

The Thought: Still on vacation but Terry is still working non stop on the bathroom tile. He has one more wall to go. So hopefully tomorrow the wall will be done and then he will tackle the floor.

It is a 'match' to the finish between him and the tile. Do you feel that way with life sometimes?
I had to remind our youngest daughter of that today. She allowed herself to get into an altercation with a younger child. She is 17. I explained gently that she was old enough to walk away. She is old enough to know what is worth battling over and their situation was not one of them. Younger children fight to the end of the battle every time. They have no knowledge skills to know the battle is hopeless and there are no winners.

I know life feels that way sometimes, but if you truly believe, you will always have hope in your heart. He has plans for you even when you feel totally dejected and rejected. He has something in store for you, but you have to do your part and believe.

There are no losers with Him.... only believers.

Are you ready for what He has for you?

'Thirteen Trees' Landscape by Laurie Pace

The Painting: From a workshop tape and experimental at best and harder than you think to work backwards for me. In all my 27 years of teaching of working back to front this one was opposite. The blues and purples actually covered the canvas first. The first layer of those colors is acrylic. Then I put in the sky in light blues leaving the contrast shapes. Next step was to put in color on the trunks. I switched to oils on the sky and trunks and then again on the ground as I laid in the colors of purples and blues.

The Thought: Working backwards. Well the models are put away. I said a prayer reminding God of how He fed the 5000 and asked if we could somehow manage to get the 5000 models into the closet. The collection has grown over the past two years.

I only say working backwards as this is the same closet I unpacked them in 22 months ago when we moved here. Terry packed them up and moved them to another bedroom closet. Then he moved them upstairs to the loft in our bedroom. NOT GOOD. Then he moved them into the garden room. THEN they went back to the bedroom closet. Two days ago I found them in my studio everywhere. So now they are back in the original location, The Hall Closet.

Can anyone explain WHY? One of those where you go around the barn several times before you find the door I guess. Or is it what goes around comes around?

Terry has been over busy with tiling the bathroom. He is on the back wall of the shower right now. More pictures as he finishes. PRAY for him as he is exhausted. He wants to have the bathroom finished by Tuesday.

We are usually facing deadlines and daunting tasks in our lives. Many things we do not want to face or deal with. Others are just things that we have to muddle through to finish. Know HE is with you through each and every trial and there is light at the end of your journey. Each task or event has its unique challenges and requires you to stay the course. Always this seems to task our very existence but in truth strengthens us for the next trial.

One step at a time... you will complete what lies ahead.

The Painting: Spice and flow created this unusual composition as I listened to the music of Bright Eyes. This is a group my future daughter-in-law loves and I downloaded it to my Mac so I could try painting by it. Made good moves with the palette knife!

The Thought: Vacation continues. I miss being in Montana and Wyoming this summer. We are rather stuck in Dallas heat and Terry continues to work on the bathroom. We have a special visitor this weekend keeping me way busy.

Terry unloaded all ALL ALL of his plastic model kits in my studio. There will be no painting until we get them relocated. This requires deep breathing for me. We get no where with discussions. When they were at his dad's house they were in a non air-conditioned space, but here, he wants them air-conditioned. Didn't seem to bother them the last 17 years over there. You can't really tell from the picture but the stacks continue behind these across the room passed his desk to the wall.

Breathe... I must center and breathe on this one seeking peace and calm. I am reassured we will find a solution.

The trick is when you are dealing with something you feel is out of hand... as you breathe in calm you exhale relief knowing God will take care of this and help find a solution. Thank Him even before one comes. Turn it all over to Him as I must these models.

Be renewed in what you do today... breathe

The Painting: This is one of those...where did it come from pieces. I absolutely love it when something just flows out and fits with balance, melody and color. This is in oil and it is applied thickly in layers, without the use of impasto.

The Thought: Vacation continues and my time this morning is very short. I would love to have you try to capture a few moments today to just sit and relax your mind. Tame the squirrels running around or let them go outside to play for ten minutes. Keep your hands open in your lap to be receptive and open. Keep your eyes open but do not focus on any one thing. Around you there will be noise or movement inside the house or outside if you are out. What is around you? Can you feel or see the flutter of butterfly wings? Are there shadows dancing nearby from sunlight? What can you smell around you?

What makes this 'moment' up has no true beginning or end. You have chosen to center yourself and allow the energy around you to fill you. God's creation has a way of nurturing and healing us if we only take the time to open our arms to receive the gift. His spirit fills you right now and restores you to fullness and life.

The Painting: There was a feeling of change as I worked on this composition. It rolled several directions before the image began to form on the canvas. This day I was not "horsing" around. The color patterns are mystical and both soft and strong at the same time. Change is that way in our lives...ever so subtle at moments and WHAM very obvious at other times.

The Thought: Well, I almost had the thought above....it was a different day for painting as this emerged and I can't wait to see wait today will bring.

Each new day should be like opening a present. Eagerly waiting for each moment as it comes with new opportunities. Note I didn't say new things waiting for you... nothing waits for you. You have to act in positive way to open yourself to new opportunities. If there is not room for change in your life, there will be no new opportunities. It will be just the same old, same old, every day.

I am handing you a new gift wrapped day... are you ready to open it?

The Painting: HEAVY oils was the call this past weekend and the need to use thick paint pulled in chunks of color. Contrasts of orange and blue, purple and yellow...set off with peppered amounts of red and green.

The Thought: On the road today. With changes happening everywhere around us, every day is a new day with new thoughts. In our lives we tend to stove up with guilty feelings from past issues. Learning to forgive ourselves and move forward is important to healing in life and finding their is a future filled with blessings.

If you are like me, sometimes you feel it is the actions of others that keep you in an uncomfortable place in life. This is never true. You have complete control over your actions and your reactions. You can chose.

Give yourself the space today to forgive and forget what was. Change cannot happen around you unless change happens within you.

The Painting: I had originally blocked this in acrylic and it was slated for oils. The humidity has been so bad here that I have had to paint more with Acrylics. The main focus was composition again and the blues and purples sweeping you through the painting. I miss not being in NY right now. The hydrangeas are gorgeous up there this time of year.

The Thought: We are still "on Vacation' as Terry worked 18 straight hours yesterday with out food. I think spending his first day of vacation doing that did not set well. I was worried that he definitely over did and told him today he had to eat through out the day and take short breaks. I will be monitoring that. I did take pictures, but at least I am way behind with ads that are due for magazines that I need to finish up quickly today.

Time Management would be the key to my day today. I challenge you to use each moment wisely. Truly stop and think before you begin this day what is a NEED TO and a WANT TO. Pray about it and do those need to's first. Then if you have time indulge in a want to. When my kids were younger the "need tos" were always revolving around them. The want to was a hot shower and probably the only thing I did get to do at the end of a long day.

Are you willing to try it? Your day might be easier if you will.

The Painting: Second in the summer series of Equine Pieces 2009. I laugh now because I have to resort to acrylic more in the summer as the oils will not cure in our humidity. Takes forever to get them to a point to varnish and mail to the buyer. This was a study in composition using balance and color to pull you from the upper right to the lower left. My circle markings are the same used in the last summer series in 2008 and only used in my summer paintings. Call it a signature if you will.

The Thought: I have a postnote on Ann Marcelyn Caver. Click her name for her website. You will see all the fascinating work of this gifted artist. The woman that wrote me from Canada of Ani's passing sent me a connection today from another blog. PLEASE take the moment to read this blog. Dr. Dwags Blawg. I believe it hurt even more to find out more of the details of Ani's death.

My blog thought is short today as we begin our three weeks of vacation. No at the moment we are not going anywhere but we have a bathroom ripped out we are replacing and changes coming to our family.

I will reflect a moment on life and the living. Make it count today. Do not waste this day or the moments you have to fill the life of someone that is empty. There is so much suffering and pain in our immediate world right with in five miles of where you live. We do not have to think of another country far away with battles, wars and hunger; it is right here in your backyard.

Depression rips away at the core soul of someone you love. Hunger for human touch and love with the knowledge that anyone cares would change a life. Wars and battles wage on in our own heads and in those minds of those we love. You cannot go fight in Iraq or Afghanistan, but you can fight right here at home.

We never know when we will be called home to Him or when someone we love will leave this earth.

Reach out to someone today.

Laurie

The Painting: The musing of color so small is a switch for me. Doing this small paintings truly enable me to see what is possible for the larger pieces. If I were working large I would not have patterned colors quite like they are here. The next step is to paint large and see what happens. Stay tuned.

The Thought: I have to blog today about Saturday night. Terry came home from work and hit the master bath working as he continues his quest to complete it. Morgan and I spent the day moving bookcases, books, and hunting down furniture. We have a guest coming and I am cleaning out the extra room.

It was late Saturday, close to 7 pm and Morgan left to put gas in his truck for the next morning's drive to work. He phoned and asked if he could pick up hamburgers for dinner and I said yes for TP but no thanks for me. The phone rang again a few minutes later and it was Morgan. There was an older woman stranded at the gas station. Her 1994 Buick would not start. She said it was running fine before she turned it off to put gas into it. That unleashed an entire evening for him but he did not know that. He phoned for us to bring jumper cables up to the station.

Terry and I drove up in the truck and Morgan and he tried to jump her car off. It simply would not start. I took her in Terry's truck to buy a battery while Morgan dropped Terry back home to the bathroom project and he grabbed Terry's tool box. We were doing great until we bought the wrong battery. That year there were two batteries that fit the car. It was the larger one.

Morgan took her back up to the auto parts store, and then back to the station to her dead car. This is about an hour and a half later. Terry gave him his small tool box but of course the right tool was not in there nor where there any pliers. I went into the Exon store but the clerk did not speak English. My heart was weary and I was truly worried about the woman as we found she was 82 years young, but her knees were giving out requiring her to sit and the heat of 100 degrees was draining her quickly. I knew whatever we did, had to be fast as darkness was upon us. The door to the store swung open and in walked a clean cut middle age man. He was in a truck and that was a positive sign. I inquired and he did have the tool we needed. He watched over as Morgan changed out her battery and we were able to get her on the road again.

Made me proud of the man our youngest son has become.

Pay it forward today.

The Painting: I have begun to do small studies for color placement in larger paintings. These are wonderful small pieces that are easily framed in a ready made frame that can hang or sit. Glass is not needed or recommended. Each one is varnished and ready to go.

The Thought: Earlier this past week I wrote about friends in seasons in our lives. Some friends stay through all seasons, and walk through all pain and joy in your life with you. Some live far away and although they are not physically there, their presence is spiritually there.

Yesterday I learned of the passing of an old dear friend. She painted out those days of high school in the late Sixties with me, she was the flower child, I was the fashion model, and we both loved art. Ani did face painting and painting on rocks for the open house at school. I was VP of the art club. We called it the Arabesque. Don't ask me why now as I have slept since then.

Carol Ann Caver aka "Ani"

At graduation we both took off on our personal journeys and did not reconnect until 1995 at the 25th school reunion. Actually it was the six months prior as we began to put the reunion together. She seemed to live a dream situation to me on my side of the fence. I was teaching art in an elementary school, raising three kids and always stressed. She lived on an island off the coast of Maine during the pleasant months of spring and summer. She spent her days in her studio working and her off time kayaking around the island. During the cold snowy times she had a second home in the Carribean where she had a studio and a gallery. She had stayed true to her course as an artist first and last. Me, I had wandered off into modeling, commercial art, advertising, family, kids, church and the typical American life. She spent her summers in Switzerland and I drooled over every email and correspondence we had. My summers were here in the Texas heat preparing lesson plans at the time.

It was in 1996-97 that I left school teaching. I didn't want to go back. Dealing with 680 rotating students into art every two days that I was not allowed to discipline left much to be desired. I was a prime canidate for a nervous breakdown. I had a room in the house to set up as a studio. Terry bought me a huge old restored oak drafting table. He painstakingly drilled 120 precise holes into a board for me to put my Prisma colors into...each standing bravely before me. I had my paints, acrylics, oils ... all there. I sent the kids off to school and Terry off to work and there I sat. I had taught art for all these years, but I didn't have clue what to do. After a week of sheer emptiness I called Ani (aka Carol Ann Caver) and cried. I sat on the couch of our home overlooking 10 miles of countryside from our hill top and I cried in pain to her. I had forgotten how to find myself and do my own art.

It was Ani's mentoring over the next two years that ignited the passion within me to create again. We stayed in touch like "best friends" in that season for the next years. In 2000 another reunion rolled around and Ani jumped back into the planning frey with the rest of us, coordinating her end from her island in Maine. When she arrived for the reunion we were bowled over at how fabulous she shined as she made the guys eyes all pop out. Must be something to not having kids...she looked wonderful. That was our Ani.

She didn't make the 30th reunion. They were traveling in Europe at the time. I missed my friend and slowly after that our correspondance grew less each month. She left Maine and moved to Montana for a season or two, and then last year moved back to Taos to a lively art community. I felt her need to search and find something she felt like she lost along the way.

It was yesterday that I opened an email from a total stranger with the news of her passing. She had moved back to her precious east coast from Taos and had just settled into her new place. She ignored symptoms of health and she slipped away from this world, from her pain of searching.

Ani left a living legacy through many she touched in her short life. My artwork today is testimony to this. It was through God connecting us that I found my path back to my art. A few years later I was blessed with the honor of mentoring Debbie Grayson Lincoln back to her art. She was also part of our art club in high school. She had put her art behind to work in the everyday world and she was ready, ever so ready to paint and find her heART again. Debbie and I will continue to branch out inspiring and igniting this gift in others. Ani's passion will live on.

Mentor someone in your life today... pass on the gifts.

Laurie

Ecclesiastes 3:1-15

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.

He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God. I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.

That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past."

The Painting: Thick color and buttery paint with this oil on canvas. Sometimes you just love the play of contrast and the gillion colors you can come up with.

The Thought: Nicknames or name calling is where I am heading off to today. Do you have a nickname? My first nickname growing up was graced upon me by my Aunt Marie. She called me Laurie Boo. That quickly became Boo-boo. Psychologically this might not have been the best choice of a nickname for a young child. Made me wonder if my presence was a boo-boo. As When I was at school in first grade I decided to change my name and began writing Amy at the top of my papers. I can still see my teacher shaking her head at me. I liked the name.

As I grew into a brave 8 year old, there was a man at the church that called me by my full name, Laurie Sue. He was big on rhyming our names with things, but I was not thrilled with Laurie Sorry Sue. Two out of two nicknames not of my choice and definitely not my favorite. Here I sit almost 50 years later and it is still sour in my mouth.

At 16 when I was dating five guys named Bill, (Sounds like a TV show doesn't it?) The tallest and oldest one in the group was in college. He nicknamed me Kitten. Kitten? Did I ever mention I am allergic to cats? We were now three out of three. I did convince him I needed two names and the second one he chose was princess. That reminded me of a dog but I felt like I was coming up in the nick-name world.

Years later, my first grandson would call me MUM. I had hopes of Marmie. Mum was definitely NOT my choice as a grandmother name, but I wore it bravely just like the Queen. As my newest grandchild arrived I petitioned her parents to use the name OMA. Oma is German for Grandmother. Did I mention I love the name OMA? My loving husband has showered me with nicknames over the years. I have known him since I was eleven and we dated through high school. No his name was not Bill. He is Terry Pie to me and his grandmother. My list of nicknames: Sweetie Pie, Mrs. Honey Bunny, and Jelly Bean. I love my nicknames now. My heart curls up around the sounds and I feel loved.

Where does this go? How many names can you think of for God? He is the Father, The Creator, He is God, He is the Trinity... what other names can you honor Him with? I have heard some folks call Him "Dad".

The Painting: Musical wanderings of color with the palette knife. The visceral blending of colors across the palette. No impasto with this one, just thick buttery oils laid on in pulled layers blending and creating a melody of it's own. Within the turns and curves you find the horses at play.

The Thought: My thought this morning ties into the painting. Each of us is created uniquely. Whatever color we are, whatever sound we make, whatever represents us as a person is unique and one of kind. God's syncopation in creation extends beyond our reasoning power, but somehow despite the differences, some subtle, some obvious, we are all here created in His love.

Philip Glass is a favorite composer in our family and our lives. His music is in a large amount of movies and productions. You might not know his name, but if you heard the tune, you would know the music. He takes the keyboard to new lengths using simple triads of minor and major combination and then he pits them backwards against each other creating tension as he builds to the core of the piece.

When I think of friends that come and go in seasons in your life, I believe it is the precious blending of personalities and melody lines creating a song for that season. When those always present "happenings" occur in your life, it is an interruption in the smooth music, bringing in dissonance and causing the melody to break momentarily, until it finds it's voice again.

When you are singing solo in life, you find yourself alone facing the world. You have to learn to give and take in your melody to have others join in your life song.

Another thought is the forced melody.... those that cross into your life and want to sing as you do... copying and echoing your notes. Try as they may they cannot reproduce what comes from your soul as God created you to be you. One day they will realize they are singing someone else's song and will find their own.

My melody is not your melody. My color is not your color. My life cannot be your life. My art cannot be your art.

Value your melody today... value your gifts and find your path. God has blessed you richly my friend. If we meet along the way, I will walk in harmony with you and share the day. Together our melodies will harmonize and be a joy to all who hear.

The Painting: Painted pulls in Acrylic are not quite the same as the oils. The oils have the viscosity of soft blends of hues as they pull. The acrylics blend but in a more controlled way. Interesting to study the difference between the mediums.

The Thought: I received my final adjusted contract today with Brightco Companies. They are using some of my horses on their glass wear cases etc. I am sooo pleased with their product and use the samples myself. They are just launching their lines right now, but if you want any of these, you need to contact them. I may have to take my own pictures for you later this week... They do not do them justice on the website!

BUT back to the contract... as I opened it up the top line said:

"AMENDMENT TO AGREEMENT BETWEEN GOD AND BRIGHTCO PRODUCTS"

My dba is Graphics One Design. Back in 1999 I had to come up with a company name and had prayed about it knowing I needed something that would remind me daily of where the gift and the source truly is. Hence came Graphics One Design, aka G.O.D. Usually I do it like this:

Graphics One Design

The Amendment line caught me totally off guard when I saw it without the periods after each letter...but God is good about catching us off guard, isn't He? He is everywhere... can you see Him?

'Copper Lady' Equine Horse Art by Laurie Pace

'Copper Lady'

30 x 30 inches
Acrylic on Canvas

COMMISSION SOLD

The Painting: A collector bought a smaller painting from me, the Red Arabian but realized it was not big enough for her home...hence we had to do something larger. She gave me her house colors and copper was important and voila, Copper Lady.

The Thought: Some days it makes more sense to climb back in bed and hide under the covers. Some days I ask myself why I even climbed out in the first place. I often wonder about adulthood and all the responsibilities attached to it. You think as you grow older you grow wiser and you recognize when to say no and step away from things. You want freedom from so much responsibility. You remember though that Jesus did not step away from what was ahead of Him. He didn't stop and ask himself, "why did you even get up this morning."

All around us in our lives are fear, anxiety, and guilt... topped off by all the jobs, chores and pressures we add to the mix. We slip into self-indulgent living and fail to recognize the loss of freedom with the new attitude. We boast ownership over "stuff" that God has entrusted to us during our earthly journey.

You might have the best of everything, or nothing at all. You might have a schedule packed with chores and errands, or you might be at home alone and depressed. No matter where you are, your only freedom is in your soul. Freedom does not give any of us the right to do what we want all the time, but it given by Him for us to do what pleases God. By using this freedom to serve others in love, we serve the Lord.

You are free to give His love to others today.

©Laurie Justus Pace Graphics One Design 2009

The Painting: I painted this in two days with layering. The first day was Saturday as I placed two layers of drippy acrylics. Then on Sunday I began working on two Arabian horses that just were not working on the canvas and I wiped over the surface with more colors. By Sunday afternoon I began to see what was evolving was a playful scene and the two ponies looked like escaped horses from a carousel. Hence the name. My mom named them. She was helping me cover paintings for my two NY gallery openings on Sunday and I was working on this composition. She always has a good comment to make. I am trying to encourage her to take some painting workshops with me. I have never taken any as I teach them... but it might be fun. ANY WAY, a collector had purchased another painting and wanted something larger. I shot her pictures of this one and she fell in love before the last paint stroke was on the canvas. So this one flew via fedex out on Monday and will arrive at it's new home today.

The Thought: Every day we have choices of what we will do for that day. In our society there are unwritten laws as well as written laws.

Believe me, we know. Make sure if you live in Texas that you attach that new registration sticker the MINUTE you get it. One of ours is floating around the studio and TP got a ticket last week. It was a nightmare to take care of. We tried three times to show proof of registration (Which we had but the officer was only a constable and he refused to look it up on the computer...which hacked the state registration people off when we had to get a paper copy of our receipt because the constable was too lazy to use his computer.) After two of our attempts to pay at the constable court, we waited a few days as they told us the ticket was not in the system. A letter arrived "A warrant will be issued for your arrest if this ticket is not taken care of in the next 10 days." Can I say WHAT? We had tried twice to pay it and it is a 30 min drive in traffic to this constable court. We headed out the door the next Monday and we were there at 9 a.m. along with several other guilty folks of the same thing from all over the metroplex. (Our friend the Sheriff said the constables are NOT supposed to be doing traffic tickets like this. I told him I would never try and argue that one with the officer that stopped us... he had a badge and a gun along with a car with lights.)

Long story short, we paid $22 in admin fees for our three trips up there but the ticket was dismissed. It would have never been written if the sticker were on the truck or if the officer had done his part of his job by checking the state registration system on his computer.

Choices... we have them. God's commandments are there for us to see boundaries. These are boundaries for our protection. Choices always allows a wider variety of options to us, and we are allowed the option to reject some of them. When we raise children we give them limited choices. " You may wear your red shirt or your blue shirt." It gives them a sense of being independent while you still maintain control. Love it while you have it, as it does not last long.

Imagine God's initial thought with Adam and Eve. Although I think He knew in His heart and mind this would happen as He knows the path ahead for each of us. They could eat of any tree in the Garden and they still had to try a bite from the fruit of the forbidden tree. Psychology tells us that if you don't make mistakes you cannot grow and learn and be successful. I don't think God would have appreciated that arguement, but it is true. Despite your attempts to always make wise choices, you are going to blow some of them.

Go with God today... be wise in your choices.

Laurie
