"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." Philippians 4:6

The Painting: Taking off on a different road with this one. The horses are more defined for space; the action is in the movement of line and counter lines playing angles against each other.
Colors are always vivid.

The Thought: Planning ahead. Is it the Great Race? In the remodeling of this house we definitely should have had a better plan and kept a better schedule. Planning ahead I should have never lined up cable or internet until we were done.

This morning I began to wake and lifted one eyelid and saw it was light in the room. Terry is on a different schedule and I knew he had to be up. My eyes flew open to the alarm clock and it was only 4 am. I realized then the back neighbors 'movement' light was on and it was reflecting off the monstrous second story next door towering over us with its silver insulating board lighting up our entire bedroom with reflections of the light. Not exactly the stars and moon we had before is it? Prayers began to tumble from my head across my lips. What am I missing that I am to learn from this? Patience must be at the top of the list. Patience in God to position us where we are to be for Him to give what we need for our lives. We must all be in place... the place He wants us to be.

How do you plan for this? Can you plan ahead? In the old testament what did Joseph do when God told him of a seven year famine? He took immediate action and began making provisions for the future by storing food. What are we each facing in our own lives right now and are we preparing for the future? Our future?

Terry and I have touched on several things over the past few months, but I believe it is time to get a firm grip on our plans for the future. God may be laughing as we do them, but with constant prayer and listening, I hold firm in my faith whatever we decide will be the best guide we can use right now.

Faith without works is dead. We must have a plan based in faith. Achieving financial freedom for retirement will be a challenge in this economic economy. Everyone can save but you have to make a decision to do it and carry through. I think for us we will begin building that 6-12 months of reserve cash in our savings account. So much of what we have is tied in the stock market. (yeah, high risk, low risk, medium risk... whatever!) The time now is to be focused on our diligence to save and be consistent. Wealth will be gather little by little. Small steps before you run.

Always know there will be unexpected things happening. That is God at work. We wise and build up that six months of living expenses. Do not waste your money. Remember to consider NEED and WANT. I am pretty tight on our money outgo right now. We are on hold unless we visit about expenditures. The Bible says in Proverbs that a good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children. In this economy that is a huge task. I don't think I will make that in money. Their inheritance will most likely be artwork.

Yes I can hear them groaning in heaven.

Make a plan today and begin to carry through to your new goal.

"You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy 2:1

The Painting: This is a second painting I was working on when Barbie was visiting. I finished it up yesterday. It began with a bottom layout in acrylic for value placement. From this point there are layers of oils piled on top using a wide brush.

The Thought: Not sure of what it is, but I have been "down" for two days straight. Hopefully today will be better. Anytime I ate or drank water it felt like a tightening in my stomach, like an old fashioned tummy ache. Did not get to go visit our best friends in Mt Vernon yesterday...so I am a bit sad. Hopefully today I can eat again.

Terry continues to rip out the bathroom in our bedroom. The shower is completely torn out and tonight I think he intends to pull out the toilet and the rest of the floor. I suggested he stay on schedule because getting up at night makes it hard to remember to stumble down the hall to the other bathroom. He is actually working today. Normally he is off on Mon/Tues but there are impt meetings at the airport and so he works 7 days straight. It will be a long long week for sure.

The baby has begun to babble and giggle. Stacey phoned late yesterday afternoon to let us hear her laugh. She was watching the food network.

I have been studying in the bible where David is taking over from Saul. There are so many events happening around those two men, it is difficult to keep up with them both. There are many players on each side of the turnover of power, and there are many deaths.

In comparison our lives seem simple with out the physical battles of warfare surrounding us and the every day anxiety of survival. Each battle has a reason in our lives. If we didn't experience the battles, we would not be stronger. Out of each blooms a grace from Him. His good is there to pour out into your life.

There are times you cannot find goodness or grace in your life. That is when I would remind you to seek Psalm 20.

Psalm 20

For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 May the LORD answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

2 May he send you help from the sanctuary
and grant you support from Zion.

3 May he remember all your sacrifices
and accept your burnt offerings.
Selah

4 May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed.

5 We will shout for joy when you are victorious
and will lift up our banners in the name of our God.
May the LORD grant all your requests.

6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed;
he answers him from his holy heaven
with the saving power of his right hand.

7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

8 They are brought to their knees and fall,
but we rise up and stand firm.

9 O LORD, save the king!
Answer us when we call!

Be assured that the grace of God is with you always.

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.”- Matthew 16:25

The Painting: I worked on this one while Barbie was here painting with me in the studio. It began with two soft layers of Indian Yellow with some dripping. Then the sketching out of the horse and the strength seem to spread across the composition before I realized it. It is one of those paintings it is hard to walk away from.

The Thought: When we woke up this morning it felt good to have known I slept all night. It was such a small thing, but yesterday I was outside waiting for mom and the head construction crew man stopped to chat with me on the building next door. He was proud of his men and the job they were doing. I could not fault that in any way and complimented him on their ability to work together so smoothly and neatly. When he pressed forward to see what I thought of the addition I had to shake my head and say I didn't like it. I explained the loss of light and nature for our contemporary home and how the very heart of it was starving for what was lost... he realized then the complexity of the situation. I shared my story of our new peeping "toms" as the two windows have full vision of our bedroom from above and they can watch us dress, undress etc etc. If I totally cover the window our bedroom is in darkness. (I do have three day blinds coming in about 10 days... seems ridiculous they are called that but it takes two weeks to get someone out.) I had leaned a nude painting on our dresser so at least they had something educational artwise to view. We visited a bit longer. He lives out in Parker north east of the metroplex and has land around him. I envy him. I miss the land and the privacy.

God bless this man, as he left yesterday, his crews covered BOTH of the offending windows so at least over the weekend we have had privacy.

As Terry and I talked about our "visceral" reaction to this choking effect on our home, we did stop and spend time visiting what we were to be learning from this situation. God puts so much before us that we walk by, often never gleaning something for our knowledge and wisdom base.
It sent us to the thought of priorities and direction for ourselves.

Everything that happens in our lives has a reason and a season and is there for us to progress further in our spiritual journey. When things confront us and we are dismayed, hurt, depressed, anxious, etc, that is when we need to STOP and climb out of that box or moment and breathe. We are where we are suppose to be... how do we need to change? What is most important, the having and being of that situation or the becoming as you climb out of it? We cannot grow with out our trials and temptations. With each occasion we are given the opportunity to take one step closer to Him.

"He said 'Do not fear, greatly beloved, you are safe. Be strong and courageous!' When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, 'Let my Lord speak, for you have strengthened me.'" Daniel 10:19

The Painting: A commission painting of two dogs, in the later years for a special lady...a gift from a special man in her life.

The Thought: When I think of dogs many things goes through my head. They are a member of our family, they are always there giving love and companionship and they are protectors. When you are in their presence, they are there for you 100 percent.

God is that way too. Old and corny I know, but GOD spelled backwards is dog. God is with you all the time. God is your protector all the time. Be secure in the knowledge that He has your front and your back sides at all times. Have faith to know He will provide you with everything you need to accomplish what needs to be done today. Be inspired by Him. Be protected by Him.

You are safe with God.

Thursday, my high school friend, Barbie, came to visit. She was in Dallas visiting her mom and sister and she came to paint with me. I have pictures to share. She did not finish her painting so next year, same time, we will paint again. She is one of those friends you wish you could grow old with close by. We never miss a beat when we see each other each year and she is like the sister of my soul.

"Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated." Deuteronomy 34:7

The Painting: I still have to finish up the eyes a bit...but I am almost finished. This is a good six layers of paint of more and three days of painting on and off. Even though it is small, it is well worked over. Staying with Acrylics for some reason, I am exploring the depth of what I can do with them. I think today I will play with watercolor layers and acrylic.

The Thought: IT'S FRIDAY! Do you get energized on Friday or relaxed for the weekend? For our family it is the middle of the week because of Terry's Airline schedule and work. Our weekend is not until Mon/Tues.

It seems for most 9-5 work people, or stay at home moms, there is a Friday sense of relief or anticipation of the weekend. The two days off seem to offer an oasis in time. Hopefully on Sunday you honor the Lord in someway. Use the weekend coming up to spiritually nourish yourself. Pause often and take a quick 10 minutes to deep breath and relax. Affirm your being and feel the power of God filling your body with each breath.

Don't over do on the yard work! More to come with pictures from our painting day yesterday.

"They met together to go and console and comfort him." Job 2:11

The Painting: This is all acrylic. I started with a charcoal sketch of the horses and then I began to see shadows and colors. Cross Hatching the palette knife gave it a woven feeling and that is where I saw the flowers...wild flowers.

The Thought: Almost late for the day for me...busy catching up on email...

Reflecting on the bible verse above... and tying it into the painting is always a start for me. Where do you go or what do you seek when you are sad or in need? Sometimes a good walk will clear your head enough that you can get your brain back in balance.

We all need comfort in our lives. It is this part of living that happens to all of us, the feeling let down by someone or something in your life... the feeling that you want to run away or hide under the covers. Perhaps that instinct is not bad, the under the covers instinct. This is the time to take an inward journey to the core of your being. That is were you will find God.
That is where you will be aware of His great compassion and love for you. God will strengthen you and reassure you as you become uplifted by communing with Him.

When you realize that this source is never ending, you begin to realize you can comfort others around you. God gives you the gift of compassion and empathy to speak to others in need. He will give you the words to comfort them.

I am lifting you up today in my prayers, that each of you will find comfort to fill whatever hurt is there.

I have a visitor today to the studio. My high school friend Barbara is in visiting from Salt Lake City. This will be the third summer she has come to paint with me. She has a natural way with the brush and I cannot wait to see what will become of today and her painting.

"Lead me in our truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long." Psalm 25:5

Painting: Yes, this is one from 2005. I was into studying values.

The Thought: I promise this is not from 2005.

Last night I had my first 'Peeping Toms'. Yes, you read correctly. I have mentioned our neighbors building a second story and two of the windows have a wonderful view STRAIGHT into our bedroom. I was assured that none of the kids would be in this area and not to worry. Well, there we were and there they were... staring in straight at us. This window they are seeing us through is a second story window in our home (Our bedroom has very high ceilings and our window is a lower window about 4 ft wide and 7 ft tall and above that a window about 4 ft wide and maybe 4 ft tall. Pictures below.) Three weeks ago this window viewed the sky with stars and trees at night. Now we view high walls, windows, peeping eyes and no sky. Sort of caught me off guard. Our choice is to carry on life and they see what they see. If we cover this window we might as well live in a closet. What would you do? If they are up late at night we will have bright lights cascading in through our second story onto our bed. This is something we are still mulling over. Stay tuned later as they finish their renovations, I will be putting a slide show together with alternating before and after pictures.

Sometimes stepping back and waiting for guidance is a must. I feel Terry and I are there right now. We seem to be stumbling a bit frantically trying to protect our privacy. When TP saw Dr Steve, our physician, yesterday, Steve was saying in his exclusive neighborhood, the lot next door bent the rules and they lost 100 percent of their backyard privacy. I laughed as Terry told him we lost that and our bedroom privacy, our garden room privacy, our dining room privacy and our living room privacy. It is rather dark over here, causing us much confusion and indecision. We must turn to God's light to find our way out of this muddled mess that is no longer our sanctuary.

The light of God will show us the wisdom of what direction we will go. Terry and I remain in constant communion with Him allowing His peace to fill us in these moments of questioning.
I imagine I will be forced to call Three Day Blinds today.

The will of God will not take you where the grace of God will not protect you.

God will light the way for you as well. Accept His blessing in your life today and go forth confidently that you are on the right path.

"Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, 'The word of the Lord that you have spoken is good.' For he thought, 'There will be peace and security in my days.'" Isaiah 39:8

The Painting: I am only doing about three to four paintings a week now. Some of my "fill in" postings are from earlier years, but this one is a fresh new one and I only finished it last night. I Sold it today already. It is layers and layers of Acrylic overlays. Then a finish three layers of varnish to seal it. Unusual for me as the painting has a dark background, based in grays and blacks. Most likely very collectible because it is so different.

The Thought: Not sure at all why I chose black and grey as I began to work this canvas.

We all have times that bring us to our knees. There are always disturbing experiences in our lives. It is during those we need to seek a place the find peace. That place is with God. Just as when you are tense, you stop and inhale a deep lungful of air. Holding it you feel your lungs expand tightly...and then you begin to release the air slowly. These actions slow the rate of your heart and masses of oxygen spill out into your blood. You begin to feel a calming sense fill your mind and body as you begin to relax. Do it again and again and again as you begin to fill your inner self strengthen with God's great peace.

Now you can go back to where you were and find kind words and actions of love to help others, including those involved in the disturbances. Lead the way and set the example.

This was from our trip to Whole Foods yesterday, Bampa and Tink in the produce section. Her daddy instructed her to check out the Mangos...and she did.

I have a post note at the bottom of this post... please take a moment and read it.

"Make a joyful noise to the Lord all the earth." Psalm 100:1

Do you have a pair of old slippers? What about a favorite coffee cup? There are things we have that bring us great comfort even in their simplicity. Those 'things' are a sign to us of contentment and when in use we feel contented and safe.

In comparison... what is joy? Those slippers are definitely contentment, a sign you have arrived home safe from the world, or warmth on a cold morning etc. But Joy, are those slippers joy to you?

Pure joy exceeds the contentment of knowing everything is going reasonable well. As you and I both know, in a split second your world can be upside down. Joy has to be found in the moment and it comes directly from Him. Joy is in us at all times, we have to be open to feel it; not clouded with issues and thoughts of the day. Joy is found in the pure silence when you are one with God. Joy is in the beauty of the earth He created for us. Joy is the warmth of sun, the freshness of a rain shower, the laughter of a child, the smile of your mother, or in the hands of your father.

Truly Joy is the spirit of God inside of you. This joy can be drawn upon in any situation. Exuberant Joy....open your heart and feel it today.

Laurie

"The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song." Psalm 28:7

POST NOTE: I wanted to share that this is the end of the first week of the existence of Daily Painters of Texas. This group was inspired by of course the Daily Painters. Micah Condon who created Daily Painters had a vision of gathering dedicated artists together in common goals to work together helping each other forward in their art. Scaling back to the state level, it was obvious after Jamie Williams Grossman put together a show for the daily painters in her area, and they had such a wonderful time with the association, several of us here in Texas decided to do the same thing. Vernita Bridges-Hoyt, Kay Wyne and I became the initiators. Together we built the blog, gathered a small group of artists statewide and are already planning our first group show this fall. If you have time, stop by and visit our new blog and see some of the finest art in Texas.

Also visit companion groups, Daily Painters of Colorado, and Daily Painters of Washington.

"My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God." Proverbs 2:1-5

"Visions"

Every father has visions for life. At first as a young boy the dreams are of "what will I be when I grow up?" Some little boys want to play professional sports, some want to be mailmen... I have no clue what my dad's visions were as a child. I know by the time he was a young teenager, he worked to support his family. There were four children. My grandfather played baseball for the St Louis team back then in the late thirties, early forties. My grandmother was a school teacher, but I don't think she was teaching after there were four children. My dad was and is a go getter. He is a planner, a goal setter and an achiever. I wish today that I knew what his dreams were as a child.

As a man grows and becomes a father, he cannot help but have visions for his own children. He might want his first born son to go into the family business, or his daughter to marry and have many grandchildren for him...and his youngest to become a doctor. Only God's time and plan plays out... the true visions of "THE FATHER" in those young lives. God has a "vision" for each of us.

God the Father gave us a great gift in our earthly "fathers". It is so frustrating to me right now with my dad's alzheimers that he cannot give me the advice and guidance I have always turned to him for. When things are crazy and I am at a loss, I cannot call him... that is when I know I am to be depending on God the Father.

Time changes all things. The seasons in our lives are there for reasons. We cannot fight the change that is happening around us. The "visions" of what was to be are simply that... thoughts and dreams. God wants us to have those earthly visions. If we did not, we would not be able to set goals and fight to reach them. We would not be strengthen by the trials we face.

On this Father's Day, I honor both of my fathers... the Creator of all mankind and the world as we know it, and my earthly dad. Both fathers have sacrificed for me over my lifetime. Both fathers have given me guidance and lifted me up when I have fallen down. The time has come for God to watch over him and for him to be held tightly and safely until it is his time to leave this earth. I cherish the love I have been given by him and cannot wait to see him today when we travel to Bonham.

This is my dad is his Red St Louis ball cap.

These are the hands that held me when I was born. That walked the nights with me on his shoulder; that comforted me as a child when I was afraid; that towel dried my hair until I thought he would shake my brains out; that made me gargle Listerine when he pulled a loose tooth out of my mouth; that would flip on the light in my room before dawn when he caught me reading in the dark; that taught me how to wash a car and get the tar off the side; that introduced me to the lawn mower and how it worked ( he never said I could not wear my bikini when I mowed). I could carry this list on forever thinking of the things these hands did for me, and I rejoice as I will carry these thoughts through out this day and the next week.

This picture was taken in Bonham last week at the ice cream store.

Remember what loving things come from the hands of 'our fathers'.

"He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.'" Mark 5:34

The Painting: Rough overlays of Acrylic as this painting evolved through many hours yesterday and early this morning. It began as a horizontal painting with three horses running at a slight angled. From there it pushed into a single horse, fired with flare and energy.

The Thought:

"Never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option"

My daughter sent me this yesterday and even this morning I am staring at it reflectively. It is pretty deep when you think about it. Comes back to the "take care of yourself" issue that so many of us do not do, especially us mothers. God seems to gift us with the need to fix things for everyone around us. As we enable them we become their answer, or their option.

What would you like to do for you today? What is something you have dreamed of getting around to? Now is the moment to seize it and do it.

"So when you are offering your gift at the alter, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift." Matthew 5:23-24.

The Painting: White orchids inspired by my mother's home, filled with these beauties; she has the magic touch with them. Layers from bottom to top working overlays of color, this is not quite finished, but I am posting it today.

The Thought: Sometime in your life I know you have experienced the learning, relearning experience. When you teach school they refer to the second time around as the 'reteach' lesson. When the first lessons comes around in your life you are suppose to muddle through it and glean information and save it for future times so you don't have to "learn" it again.

AH, but there is always something we do not get the first time around. Some of us take many times around of the reteach before we get it. Along this process of what could be years of experiencing and just not getting it, God is there forgiving us and trying to guide us. One major obstacle often is our own person...ourselves. We often do not get past forgiving ourselves, or we doom ourselves to be unable to go forward.

The lesson today, the 'reteach' lesson for today, is for you to release your past hurts, your past perceived slights by others and to forgive yourself. In the world there are those that resent you probably as much as you resent some of your own faults or you resent them. Healing needs to take place for you to move forward. Forgive yourself, then forgive others and then...most important, remember to ask for forgiveness from those you have hurt.

Just think about that for a few moments and let it sink in. What are you carrying around in your life right now, this moment that you need to let go of and forgive someone? Do you need to ask for their forgiveness as well?

Judge not others as you would want them to not judge you.

"For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess." Deuteronomy 30:16

The Painting: Cool colors and a thick paint applied with a palette knife. The subtle softness of the petal of this flower was captured through the thick application of paint pulls giving it a truly dimensional effect.

The Thought: One of our neighbors handed Terry a "copy" of an article from a published program from the TOUR OF HOMES in 1960 here in Dallas. There was our little home in it.
What amazes me is our "dining room" is really suppose to be a den. The only dining area in the house is what most of us would term the Breakfast area. It is not very large so it definitely would not handle a dining room set.

I can't help but wonder what the visions were of this architect. The front rendering of the house is the same but the prior owner did heavy landscaping. That is part of or issue right now with drainage. I think Terry will be renting a baby machine to level out the dirt and move it around to put the grade falling from the house instead of running into the house.

I wish I could have seen the circular fireplace of copper and glass mosaic. WOW. We would need pictures to even begin restoring that. And there was a built in couch on the circular curved wall of stone in the living room. Not sure how comfortable that would have been!

We have been working on the garden room in the REFOCUS project to turn your eyes away from the walled off growing ugliness of the house next door. Terry put in huge palms yesterday. I have to get in there today and water everything and try and clean it up. Then I can take pictures.

You truly never know what exists in someone else's mind.... as I would love to know so much more about this house and it's original design. We can never go back to yesterday to find that...only forward with today. We may not have tomorrow... so only today we need to be the best we can be for God and for ourselves. Live in this moment and make the best of the day right now.
My mother, aka Mema, and baby Lauren, my grand-daughter.

'To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.' When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. Concentrate on this sentence... 'The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

"He brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.'" Genesis 15:5

The Painting: So many things played into this composition. It was painted in 2008 but I retouched and reworked it as I brought it home from one of the galleries. The gallery lost it's lease and it was sad as it had just opened two months ago. This is one of my palette knife paint pulls of my horses. You can feel the summer day as you are pulled into the sunlight in the pasture. Using contrasting colors of reds and greens through out most of the composition, I down played the oranges and blues to build a quiet symphony of color in the background. Are they pausing at water or are they sharing the grass?

My Thoughts:

Have you ever stood outside (as an adult) and looked up into the vast night sky? Here in Texas you can see forever counting the stars and watching for the occasional shooting star. If you are a science buff or had a grandfather that took you star gazing, you begin to see the patterns making out the constellations in the sky. Another one of God's magnificent masterpieces! There seems to be no limit to His creation when you are realizing each star is a planet in itself. How deep your thoughts can go in His vast creation.

There is of course no limit to the good awaiting you as a child of God. The good He brings into your life is right there. But if you are like me, you might be missing it because you are so busy "living".

Live today by looking around to see what He has brought into your life. Health, wisdom, resources, family, home, friends, gifts to give back,... make a list and it becomes obvious that you have a multitude of good in your life.

"Amazement seized all of them, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, 'We have seen strange things today.'" Luke 5:26

About the Painting: This is one of my thicker pulls of paint on canvas. The energy of the horses straining up and forward fighting for position is felt by first glance. Painted with a palette knife and Holbein Duo Oils, this painting has an appraised value of $1295.

Thoughts today:

It is going to be a long month. Wish it was time to take vacation. The work has started next door and there are men climbing and ripping the roof off. The noise level is moderate but it will be impossible for the baby to sleep once the construction starts. The work men are parked in front of our home making it impossible for our household to have guests. Stacey suggested cones out front. Sunday was the last day of trees, light and peace. Our world is forever changed and invaded by progress.

We have consulted several decorators and realtors and our plans are not firm yet....we will do the best we can trying to understand God's hand in this. Please remember what you do in life affects other people. Try and take their feelings in consideration as you make changes and others will be adversely affeced. Give them time to adjust and make adjustments to what you are planning and doing. The word is empathy. Be empathetic.

The baby was here yesterday and I am expecting her momentarily. I do have pictures on the camera and a movie too. She rolls from front to back and talks and babbles the day away.

Workers next door ripping the roof off in preparation of a big wall to go up and we will
loose light, sky and trees.

This was Sunday when we went to visit Dad. This is Mom and Dad. He is wearing his new
St Louis Cardinals Hat I bought him.

And this is Baby Lauren at 3 1/2 months.

Be empathetic today.

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world." 1 Peter 5:9-10

The Painting: This is 30 x 30 Canvas and truly this size is one of my favorites to paint on. Terry hates boxing them! This painting looked totally different when it started. It was in all purples and blues with some yellow green... and look at it now. Learn more below in my story!

My Thought for the Day:

Last week must have been a weird moon week or something. I was on the Boards at Daily Painters and was reading a message from Micah Condon, the founder of Daily Painters about Maryanne Jacobson and one of her pieces. She had written about how the painting came to be and it had an emotional tug to it. It was about "seeing red" and "being hurt deeply" by someone you love close to you.

I felt such hurt and betrayal this week in my life. It literally shook the foundation of my soul like an earthquake. Something so small and yet so devastating. This was the first painting I did after the incident. I never saw red, I only felt emptiness, coldness and shock. When I took to the easel, I started with my favorite colors of purples and blues knowing they were soothing to me as I have been sorting things out in my head. My mom had spent the night as she still had no electricity after the storm... and I was painting when she came into the studio Saturday morning. I had a purple background and a blue and green horse going with white and gold mane flying everywhere. I stopped and cleaned up so I could do things with her getting her refrigerator cleaned out (3 days of no power is costly) and we made a visit to the grocery to buy new things. When I returned home, I stepped back and studied the horse...and it was empty. The head was bowed down as if in giving up or submission.

Then I realized survival is the only answer and moving forward is the only way to go. God has answers for me, but while I do not know not what they are, despite the emptiness, I have to live this day. So out came the greens, reds, yellows, violet blues and blacks. The horse became transposed by the action and thickness as the paint began to layer up and build. Earthy tones begin to mesh into horse flesh and out came this contrast of pose versus color....but the life and breath is there to carry on. I left the initial pose as it was. The horse's head is down. It is a reminder to me of this time in my life and I am humbled to be held in God's embrace as I gain back what I have lost.

Jesus was betrayed by someone close to Him. He knew the pain and the disappointment of the betrayal, but He also knew it would happen before it did. Why would anyone close to us, like Judas was to Jesus, betray us? Someone being close to you, having a trusted relationship should be a "safe" person that you entrust your vulnerabilities to. When you are betrayed by this person it can leave you speechless.

You have to step back and remove yourself from it if you can. Something had to step into their lives to change their priorities. They had to mentally make the decision to take the actions they took and by doing so, they denied the trust you had with them. Desires of the heart often do that to all of us at one time or another. We often think our actions are not harmful to others, but in truth they are. A small thing can change the world. Most likely Judas did not believe Jesus would be condemned to death...and did he do it for money or for showing of power?

We are all guilty of betraying people in our lives. Evil is in our world and we have to be careful not to be influenced by it. If our focus is on God, Satan cannot get into our hearts. The moment we turn our heads, even just to look, we are vulnerable to attack.

Your life is your life... look to God and live today.

Laurie

Post note: this verse came to me today... like I had never read it before. I hope it speaks to you as it did to me.

"No one takes my life from me. I give my life of my own free will. I have the authority to give my life, and I have the authority to take my life back again. This is what my Father ordered me to do." John 10:18

"And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" " Genesis 3:11

A Painting a Day:

Nude studies I have not painted in a long time. I may not be done with these...but they are close. Painting small is always a challenge and I am accustomed to doing nudes with a palette knife in multiple colors. These are with soft oils applied with brush.

My thought for the day:
When I think of the word "naked"... I don't really think of being with out clothes... I think of being emotionally open. It is a vulnerability of the soul.

The long term discussion of Eve and the apple still goes back to Adam stood there and watched her do it. He was guilty by not stepping up and saying "no". When I was painting these two figures I kept thinking of this part of the bible story...Adam looking off like "I can't see what she is doing..." and Eve looking up, " Hummm, maybe no one will notice if I just try a little."

I think we do this in our lives every day. We sit back and watch someone do something we know is wrong and we do nothing...we say nothing. Or we think we can bend the rules just a little bit and maybe no one will notice. (Yes that counts speeding down the street in your car over the speed limit.)

Think twice today before you do it and think no one is looking! God knows all even before you do it. Talk about vulnerable... He knows before you know.

"When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed my lambs.' " John 21:15

The Posted Painting: A struggle between palette knife and color and the color won out. This is one of my earlier horse paintings from 2006. We are still recovering from the storms here and not much painting is happening right now.

My thought for the day:
Partnerships are great. Think of what positives comes from having someone working with you toward a goal. That could be a spouse, a business partner, a teacher and student, a minister and his flock, or you and God. There are many possible combinations. When there are two together, they stand stronger than one. When you stand with God, you cannot be defeated by your circumstances. Maybe it is good to take His divine ideas to heart and apply them today.

Standing with Him, you become a thinker and doer of the best intentions. You become alive and participating in life enthusiastically. Energy flows through you into your plans and your own well-being.

Today accept the partnership with God and His gift of life. Give thanks and live it fully.... I am, even as we clean up mud, leaves and broken tree limbs. God is good.

"For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm." Proverbs 1:32-33

THE PAINTING TODAY: This is a painting done several years ago. I have a huge mess here after our big storm yesterday and scrambling to post this morning. This is a palette knife painting with warm colors on a field of blue and green. The contrast is there, but the feeling of the composition is one of calmness. Hence I named it "with grace".

My Thought for Today:

Yesterday was NOT a typical day at all and this "thought" is not typical either! I had an opening last night at a new super doctor clinic in town with my art work.... and was looking to a calm day of painting and getting ready for the show.

It had begun raining and storming on Wednesday night... and all through the night it rained and stormed. We thought it was to be a passing squall line... but no.. it was not. Thursday morning dawned to more more rain. Terry left for work about 5:30 am and I was doing bookwork in the studio and cleaning up paints. Morgan left for work at 9 and I checked the radar and realized the storm was growing. By 10:30 the lightening was so severe it was literally crashing outside every window .. POP POP POP... and I heard bang thud on the roof. Then the roof started leaking in the garden room...I began to sense urgency as I raised the blinds on our 8 ft south window in the bedroom and realized the rain was hitting it full force from the south. The storm was out of the north... it was a micro burst of reverse winds and rain. The power kept going on and off. I went to the side window by the baby grand and the water was up on the window sill. I than hurried to the front door and found the front planter box (Which is huge) totally holding water and the water trying to back fill into the house.

Grabbing a bucket, I began bailing out the flower bed in the midst of the storm. It was filling as fast as I was bailing. I put several frantic calls into Terry who did not answer the phone and went through a phone contact at his work to find him. When he arrived home we were both out in the storm trenching ditches to pull the water away from the house where it was up over where it should be. That took us almost three hours. We were both drenched and very muddy. This is work to be finished this next week...instead of starting our bathroom renovations.

At the bottom of our hill (We are two houses from the bottom) the streets were flooded almost up to the doors of the houses and there were cars submerged. I could not take pictures in the rain because I was so busy trying to save our house.

The back yard looked worse. We have huge trees that lost limbs bigger than most small trees. I think that is what hit the roof and bounced off. Annie dog hide in the shower in our bathroom and Paddy was glued to my side. This day will be filled with clean up.

We made the clinic opening and it was wonderful. Great food, folks and fun. Found out that the new clinic had flooded that morning before they even opened. The rain definitely got the best of the situation all the way around. The new clinic is HealthCareClinics.com here in Dallas. Open 7 days a week, 13 hours a day and they have OBGYN, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, CTScan, Xray, etc etc. They literally cover it all. The facility was designed for the task with over 46 exam rooms. It is unbelievable. It was an honor to have them purchase paintings for the new office.

We gave thanks over many times yesterday to God for sparing us from what could have happened. All of this is in His power and we know He will provide what we need for us to move forward. Remember those in the world today that are affected by storms. Many lose their homes from flooding...they lose their lives and all the human treasures they have stored. Bless them to remember that God has more for them and sometimes we have to lose to gain.

I could not take many pictures as the work was immediate need... but I took some after shots and pictures from the opening.

May He bless your day with soft winds and sunshine.

"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." Exodus 20:17

A PAINTING A DAY: This was painted a few years ago as a commission painting. I have not had time to take pictures of my work from the weekend yet, so I pulled from my archives.

My Thought for the Day:

There is a song from Vacation Bible School from many summers ago, when my grandson was only 5. I led the music for bible school and the theme song was "I AM A PROMISE". The words have never left my brain and my grandson is almost 12 now.

I think it went like this:
"I am a promise
I am a possibility
I am a promise with a capital "P"
I am a great big bundle of potentiality
And I am learnin' to hear God's voice
And I am tryin' to make the right choice
I am a promise to be anything God wants me to be.

I can go anywhere that He wants me to go
I can be anything He wants me to be
I can climb the high mountains
I can cross the wide sea
I'm a great big promise you see!

I am a promise
I am a possibility
I am a promise with a capital "P"
I am a great big bundle of potentiality
And I am learnin' to hear God's voice
And I am tryin' to make the right choice
I'm a promise to be anything God wants me to be
Anything God wants me to be!"

I think so often in our lives we limit ourselves. He wants each of us to shine with the gifts He has graced on us. We have mentors in our lives that help us begin journeys, but it is up to us to find our path and experience our growth in our life in our own way.

Yes, you are a promise and a possibility...a great big bundle of potentiality.... celebrate life today and who you are, just as He made you as you go forth to your possibilities!

"To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of His call and will fulfill by His power every good resolve and work of faith." 2 Thessalonians 1:11

A Painting a Day: This is one of my collected painted pony pulls. This is an exclusive style that I developed in 2005, which is a story in itself. If you ever buy one I might share the story! This is a painting created in layers, MANY LAYERS. It takes lots of paint, patience and trial and error. The effect reminds me of shimmering heat, the kind of heat we have in Texas.

My Thought for the Day:

Time to climb out of our boxes today. If we can do that... my imagery is with a ladder because I am so deeply down in this box. By stepping out of our comfort zone and our "self" zone, we can then begin to serve others. God embraces us daily in our walk, and today is a perfect day to embrace others around us. Extend your thoughts, smiles and prayers to the people in your life.

Imagine God embracing them and showering them with His grace and loving presence. As you do this you are opening the way for them to be renewed and filled with Him. Inner peace will follow allowing God to step in and work His plan in their life.

It is your climb out of the "self" zone and giving the effort to share God with others. Be One.

"Amazement seized all of them, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying,'We have seen strange things today.'" Luke 5:26

A Painting A Day: Inspired by the "Bathed in Light" © 2009, I began a journey with undercoats of Raw Sienna and Cobalt Blues. The next layer was in golds and yellow until I had a consistency built up to the edgy point of carving. Working on the square canvas leads to either many horses or just one. You can see where it ended up. Adding at least 12 more layers of color, this painting is quite thick. It gets to the point I am carving in paint and I love it!

When Buying Art Work off the Internet: There are hundreds of fabulous artists selling their work on the internet. While it is always good to do your homework and check out their experience and their number of years painting, it should NEVER dictate if you should buy the work. If you are buying strictly for investment, then it is important to find out as much as you can about the artist. When buying for the home your emotions play the largest part in purchasing a painting. If a painting calls to you, where the artist comes from, or the number of years they have painted is NOT important. You buy art that you love to be apart of your home to enrich your life.

My Thoughts for the Day:

Does age matter? I guess it might in some things like experience needed to perform certain jobs...but does it matter as you get up in the morning?

Remember when school was out for the summer... and you packed up your desk in a paper bag and took it home? Then in the morning when you woke up the first delicious thought was ... IT IS SUMMER! NO MORE SCHOOL.

What would it be like to wake tomorrow morning and feel that unburdened? I am willing to try it if you are. Young at heart is meeting the world each morning welcoming the experiences of the day to come with childlike wonder of the great gifts you will find ahead. New opportunities to explore; new people to meet; a child like innocence waiting to burst forth as you jump out of bed.

Be cheerful as you face new challenges today. Find surprise in something and smile. God has tucked something special away just for you today.... can you guess what it is?

I wish you a song in your heart to be blessed to be young at heart.

"The Law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple." Psalm 19:7

A Painting A Day: Eruption of color and movement are what comes to mind when I think of this piece. It began totally as a different subject and the subtle movement of twisting color brought this composition into focus as a thick dimensional feeling emerged. Areas of paint are up to 3/4inch thick. Those are the wonderful Holbein Duo Oils I use... no impastos on this baby!

A Thought for the Day:

There are those days in life that seem out of focus. From the moment you wake and throw off the covers it feels different. At first it might be thoughts of, "I didn't sleep well last night... I could use another hour of sleep." or "Is it Sunday or Monday?" That is my favorite. With Terry working a weird schedule from the rest of the world, I never know what day it is.

Trying to get your thoughts and body back into focus is not the easiest thing. Our world is complicated and confusing most of the time due to our own choices. When we are on overload, that is when the 'out of focus' seems to creep in. Despite this chaos and momentary feeling of confusion, there is something to be learned. For most of us, it is the need to simplify and foucs on what is REALLY important in life.

Easy to say, but responding to things with a peaceful heart is the best for your health.

Remain calm today no matter what confronts you. Bring your life back into focus. This will inspire the others around you to be calm as well.

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.” Psalm 90:2, 4

"The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom and whatever else you get, get insight." Proverbs 4:7

A Painting A Day: This is the third in my light series of flowers. The beginnings of each of these are a study in values and light done in off shades of acrylic paint, totally different than final hues. This allows me to study the painting as I begin to pull in the oils by palette knife. First layer is a charcoal sketch blocking in the composition. Second layer is acrylic in blue, black, orange and white. Third, the final layer is oil pulled with the palette knife.

My Thought for the Day:

Okay, as you read this message this morning ...STOP. Stop and think about why you are here... here on this earth. Here with this family and friends... what is the true purpose and meaning of your life?

You are made up of years of daily experiences that have molded you into who you are today. Each experience gives you insight into the next days of your life. Think of each day as a building block strengthening you to become who you are. Your daily education is your experience... your life lessons you might say. From these experiences you live and hopefully you live a life with purpose and meaning. Do you?

God offers divine wisdom to all of us that are open to receive it. Struggling does not always have to be the process of life experience. Struggling makes us stronger, but I would guess if you were in line with the Lord on things, you would not struggle as much.

Look to those new experiences this day as you live and accomplish new achievements. May they be blessed today and in the future.

This just was sent by Jill, one of the folks that keeps me smiling. Thank you Jill for sharing Ray Ruffner and this beautiful song!
