Promises Promises Promises

"Then the Lord told Abram, "Leave your country, your relatives, and your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you. I will cause you to become the father of a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and I will make you a blessing to those who bless you and curse those who curse you. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you."
Genesis 12:1-3

Have you ever had one of those invitations come in the mail for three full days and airfare paid to a resort, if you will come and spend three hours and tour the resort and listen to a sales pitch? They truly reach out and bait you, don't they. OR you get something in the mail saying you just won a fabulous gift, if you will drive out to the new lake lots being developed north of town, you can get your free gift... the promises are endless. How do you know the trip is really free and the resort is great? How will you ever find out what the gift is or if you will really miss out if you do not take it?

I guess you won't unless you step out in faith and just do it. I know Abraham had to do just that. God gave a heavy promise of many things in the verse above. It was absolutely everything a man in that time period could want and even more. Abraham had to weigh the promises with that of what he had to leave behind... his family, his home and his country. He had to travel to a place he didn't know anything about to receive all the promises that God made to him.

Did you ever make promises to your children? What is the difference between a bribe and a promise of reward? I truly would welcome comments on this. Terry and I took a course for our Foster License and this was part of the course, but I want to hear what you think about it.

Was God bribing Abraham? Was God making him a promise of reward? What was God doing here....and what do you do in your life?

Promises Promises Promises....I break them more when it comes to myself. If I will break promises to myself so easily, how can I keep my word to the Lord? Are you keeping your promise?

Joy and Abundance,

Laurie

" After Lot was gone, the Lord said to Abram, ' Look as far as you can see in every direction. I am going to give all this land to you and your offspring as a permanent possession. And I am going to give you so many descendants, that, like dust they cannot be counted. Take a walk in every direction and explore the new possessions I am giving you.' " Genesis 13:14-17

GOOD BLOG this morning - got my brain thinking.
The difference between a bribe and a promise….
A promise is like a covenant – no exchange between parties involved. Like a parent promises his child to prepare him for the future, never to treat him unjustly and always support his decisions (when they are right). The child is expected to give nothing in return, but hopefully love and respect will be the result of those promises. And the promise comes first. Nothing needs to be done to "earn" it. Like God's covenant with us.
A bribe is implies an exchange. When you clean your room, we’ll go out for ice cream. When you lose 30 pounds, I’ll buy you a new wardrobe. If you’re good, I WON’T make you sit in time out! The bribe is secondary to the actions required.
I have done both - promises and bribes. And both have been effective when I stuck to them...
Abraham had to move though... so he had to exchange his trust and do the work to get a reward. God's promise was his reward at the end of his work. To me with a bribe you are given it before you do anything in return. In retrospect, Judas was given his 30 pieces of silver as a bribe, or was he? Was it a bribe or reward? Thoughts from my hubby as he weighs in. aka TERRY
