I was smiling as I read the article written about me in the Dallas Morning News. I do not think the writer got the jest of the situation. She made is sound like I snapped my fingers to do what I have done.

It has taken me 55 years to get where I am today. Every life experience, every job I have had, from head artist at an ad agency to modeling, to fashion illustration, to singing with a band... every experience brought me to where I am today. Her article made it sound like I did it all in four years. I just wanted to share with you that it takes more than that. As I appreciated the coverage, I did not appreciate the downgrading of the total amount of work that I put in at the computer and in my studio. The study, the painting day after day after day, hour after hour. I am NOT a weekend painter. I did NOT look at Galleries in Jackson four years ago and say, I CAN DO THIS. God was moving in my life at the time and it was HIS time, not mine. I saw the work there and knew I needed to paint more. I saw the work there and knew I had a gift I was not using to my fullest. I went to work pulling on every thing from my past, art training, past painting experience, life experience....and I painted literally from five in the morning each day to close to ten at night. I did that for three or four years. I worked to hone my gifts and my painting ability. From the amount of practice each day, my skills sharpened and my style developed. Had I not done that, I would not be where I am today.

Only recently did I adjust my schedule to try and break for about three hours from four each afternoon until seven...and then I work for two more hours before bed. So my day at work is only 12 hours a day now instead of 15-16. (Please remember, I also cook, clean and enjoy my music and my husband as well...along with all the bookkeeping for my business and our household.)

Being a full time artist is a commitment beyond, I CAN DO THIS. There are many weekend artists out there with full time jobs. They have incredible talent but have not made that decision to rely on their gift for their livelihood. I walk in faith every day that the Lord will not only inspire me (which he has never failed to do) and to provide me the strength to continue with my work.

When you walk in faith, you have to believe 100 percent that He will provide. If there is any doubt, it will not happen.

Grace,
Laurie

"But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind." James 1: 15-7

Ater reading your post today I was reminded of a statement an artist friend of mine made to me several years ago. I was grumbling about all the things I had been through over the years trying to get my artwork recognized when he looked me straight in the eyes and said "It takes twenty years to become an overnight success". Your are so right in the fact that everything that comes our way prepares us to do what we do. And it is always on God's time schedule. Like you,I have been doing this for over fifty years, and I am always amazed that people think I just wave a magic wand and the artwork appears. they just don't have a clue! Well I guess I had better get back to painting. It's what keeps me out of this awful Texas heat! Best wishes to you from Canton!
